Anyone here from Attercliffe? (Part 2)

Recommended Posts

yes it was nice place to work and they had the old zion church opposite for storage,it was burnt down years ago,the sarnie shop next door opened a night club on west street

and there was the old fruit barrow men on street corners, banners dept store and shentons furnishers opp banners (always disliked by Mathews furnishers owners as he was a director there before hand, but what a shopping centre, never to be replaced.

I remember the Habib Bank of Pakistan. I think that is the one to which you are referring.

If I remember right it was in a row of shops roughly where the Institute of Sport now stands. On the corner of Coleridge Rd. and Attercliffe Rd. heading towards town there was The Salutation Pub then The Pavilion Cinema and then one or two shops and then the Habib Bank. This would have placed it roughly opposite Hill Top Cemetery so not too far from the Nat West.

Seem to remember it having a plain white front that looked nothing like a bank, more like a shop but with small windows.

Chris

Thanks for that Beamish. In 1973/74 I worked at Barclays Bank opposite the Travellers (?). I used to have to take cheques down to the Bank of Pakistan. I'd no idea who they were for, I just did as I was told.

Opposite Barclays and next to the Travellers there was a sandwich shop. Excellent bacon and sausage sarnies.

Hi all - Used to frequent the Astoria Ballroom at the corner of Staniforth Rd and Attercliffe, it was over the 50bob or Burtons (?). Had some good times there, are the buildings still there? Or is it all different now? fleetwood

Hello Fleetwood. It was Burtons and the building is still there.

Hi all - If the Palace Attercliffe is still standing, what might it be presently or what did it become after it's demise as a live entertainment establishment? My Dad loved live theatre and took me to a few shows there over the years. fleetwood

It's nearly on topic and it happened in Attercliffe, anyway it's to do with the Palace Attercliffe which I have already mentioned before and my infrequent visits there. A comedian was on the roster and not faring too well with the audience, he cracked a gag (long forgotten) which got a few little titters but one audience member above all the rest laughed out loud, now the comedian was able to use one of his stored ad libs I suppose and said, 'thank you sir, I knew you were in somewhere, but I didn't know where you were'. Obviously it went down very well and I've always remembered it. A short time after that cut to a bus ride from town on the upper deck with a friend of mine (and mind I am not a good joke teller), I proceeded to tell him the whole rigmarole with the guy finishing up his gag 'thank you sir...... ......where you were'. My pal laughed and laughed (made me feel good), I'm getting off at my stop and my friend is going around to the terminus where we are meeting up later. he eventually told me he couldn't supress his laughter on the bus, with rest of the passenger's wondering what the hell was wrong with him. Anyway it was funny at the time. fleetwood

Hi All,

Below is a pic of the Adelphi on Vicarage Road taken recently by member brian1941, followed by one from Picture Sheffield in July 1980.....

Here is another pic from Picture Sheffield showing the Adelphi and another building next to it at the corner with Attercliffe Road.....

We have a question. Can anyone tell us what this 'other' building was originally and if it still stands?.

I've seen it described as Burtons elsewhere but think this may be incorrect as there was a Burtons at the corner of Attercliffe Road and Staniforth Road in the building shown here...
