Hillsborough Barracks

Recommended Posts

I was walking with my friend to Morrisson's to buy some beer last night and saw the Hillsborough Barracks. Very impressive. When was the last time the army were there though?

Google is your friend: Hillsborough Barracks

Thanks. So according to Wikileaks, no one has bothered to go there since 1930. Seems a shame cos it looks nice there. Hopefully it will be used by the army again one day.

Well hopefully it won't need to be

Unless part of basic training will be negotiating the fruit and veg section in Morrisons.

I have a vague recollection of reading that British Army barracks were built to standardised plans depending on where in the world they were being built, and that Hillsborough barracks were built to Indian barracks plans due to an error by the War Department. Has anyone else heard of this?

Finest example of a walled barracks outside London I read somewhere, or at least it was until Mcdonalds, B&Q and Morrisons were allowed to build there.

I always thought that the parade ground was cobbled, must have been wrong.

Here are some postcard views of Hillsborough Barracks in its heyday (the first three are dated as per the postmarks):

1914 view of the main gate

...1905 photo looking down "Barrack Hill"

......1908 view looking up "Barrack Hill"

.........St George's Day parade, 1913.

I was researching an English composer ,I think it was George Butterworth

He was stationed at Hillsborough Barracks while serving with the Northumberland Fuseliers

50+ years ago part of the accommodation was used for housing.
