Manchester is very good.

The football museum(free) is excellent, even if you only half like football.

Also the museum of Science and Industry(free) is huge, and over a large site.

Opposite this is the aerospace part of the complex, old planes and transport to get close to, again free and very good to pass the time.

Both the Premier League grounds also are decent places to have look at(Old Trafford does have all the statues for photos etc)

Last year we stayed over on Salford Quay, I was very impressed with here, on the tram route, just out of way, on here there are the Media City complexes where BBC and ITV studios are based (there are a few thing to have a go on and photo opportunities.)

There is a large shopping centre here also if you want to go shopping, and the quays are huge, nice for a wander on a sunny day. When we were there they were doing sailing and other water sports which was a good watch.

Also the city centre has quite a few eat and drink places, and I quite like the feel of the place.

Go for it, the tram staff on the stops are excellent and will help you get to where u are going, even tell you which ticket and direction tram you need.(and they like a bit of Manchester/Sheffield banter!)

Yes, the Whitby to Pickering steam train route is lovely, (and might go on to York.) It's very scenic and you can get on and off at different stations.

They also have weekends that are themed.

The 40's weekend is great, with each station on route taking part with costumes, props, etc. Not sure when it is, but it's well worth the effort.

what about Whitby?

Whitby is gorgeous but you can't get there by train in under 3 hours. Train to Scarborough 2 hours on a good day, two minutes before the bus to Whitby goes then an hour on the bus. If the trains late then it will be four hours.
