My lovely Mum used to tell the story of when she was in labour with me in 1960. I was her second baby and was to be born at home in Stannington.

When she thought 'it was time' she sent my Dad to the nearest phone box with a handful of old pennies to phone the local midwife who arrived on her bicycle half an hour later - only just in time !

She was called Nurse McNamara I believe (known locally as Nurse Mac).

Nurse Hesketh looked after the Wybourn, being the second oldest boy of six I was sent to give her updates on mums labour, she had a car ( Morris 1000??? ) and it was one of very few on the estate at that time.

Isn't it amazing just how much is locked at the back of your mind?

Happy Days.
