Market Tavern Exchange Street.

Recommended Posts

My family kept this pub way back in the 1920s when it was known as Rotherham House. The pub has had many names over the years and in the 1970s was a Berni Inn in its last years sadly it went downhill and closed in 2006 and left to dereliction since. With the Castle Market closing and plans to pull that down what will happen to Market Tavern? Iv looked on the Internet and asked at Howard House but no one has an answer to my question has anyone seen or heard anything in relation to the pub?

The Market Tavern [Rotherham House] is not due for demolition .

The buildings that spread along Castle Gate as far as the Bull and Mouth will be kept.

Maybe there will be some news to add to this with regards part of the Castle Market as well.

just seen they have started demolishing castle market, is the market tavern defiantly being kept and the building next to it? would be a shame to loose them as they could look quite nice once the areas redeveloped. especially all the stone work above the doors/windows etc

The Rotherham house along with the Castle Market is haunted [just ask the security men who patrolled the Market on nights ,one was laid off work due to fright].

So those demolition men had better be care full not to upset the apple cart:mad:

My uncle ran this pub in the early 1950's, it was eerie at night when the place was empty of a very colourful clientele. At that time the customers were market traders and solicitors from the courthouse nearby, all very lively with lots of musical talent on the small stage and always a piano player.

I didn't enjoy staying there at night as it was reputed to be haunted, probably added to the attraction of the place.

When did it become the Market Tavern, I do remember the Rotherham House, and the Berni inns, but don't recall the last name, I did leave the country in 1981, however, also.I wasn't much of a townie in my last few years in Sheffield.

I didn't say there was a ghost there and, my uncle (now deceased) never mentioned it either, just that it was eerie to me as I was a child at the time.
