Ex England manager Graham Taylor has died

Recommended Posts

The former England manager Graham Taylor has died aged 72 following a suspected heart attack.

Taylor, whose playing career took him to Grimsby Town and Lincoln City, managed England during a turbulent spell from 1990 until 1993 and also had two spells in charge at Aston Villa and Watford, as well as managerial tenures at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Lincoln. In recent years he had worked as a pundit on the BBC and BT Sport.

That's quite sad. He wasn't good enough at England level but was a decent club coach and a fair pundit.

That's your Allotment, mate. You've gone to the great turnip garden in the sky.

If only he'd played Waddle, instead of Barnes.

RIP Graham Taylor.

Another good one gone. He was always worth listening to. We shared an appreciation of the qualities of Carlton Palmer.

One of Worksop's finest exports.

I agree. I'm no lover of football, hence I'm rarely on the Sports thread - but I did want to say that he came across as a likeable man who was treated like dirt by the scumbag press. No doubt the said press will be full of glowing tributes to him tomorrow

I didn't know much about him or his career until The Scum photoshopped him to look like a Turnip and got the country to hate him - something that seems to have happened to every England manager since.

A few pics of their hypocrisy here:

and their mocking of Roy Hodgson's speech:

He was one of the good guys and he didn't forget his old team mates. A pal of mine played for Lincoln at the same time as he did. When he suffered a stroke thirty odd years later, Graham Taylor was one of the first to call him.

A great club manager, maybe the England job was too big for him but he wasn't alone there.
