The virus is similar [they both attack the nervous system] but they are not the same illnesses.
 Share this content via...

Zenmaster   10 #7 Posted August 17, 2005 As far as I'm aware you can only get the mumps once. My father had the mumps. Very nasty.
 Share this content via...

The virus is similar [they both attack the nervous system] but they are not the same illnesses.  pls see the following http://www.medinfo.co.uk/conditions/shingles.html  shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus & is therefore albeit the same.once u catch chickenpox you're body retains the virus hence u cant catch it twice EVER. shingles is almost like a "flare" up of the virus in your system.  After a case of mumps it is very unusual to have a second bout because one attack of mumps almost always gives lifelong protection against another. However, other infections can also cause swelling in the salivary glands, which might lead a parent to mistakenly think a child has had mumps more than once
 Share this content via...
willman   10 #9 Posted August 17, 2005 if u get mumps when u r near puberty it often causes a little more concern from the medical people.
 Share this content via...

willman   10 #11 Posted August 17, 2005 Originally posted by nick2 Ok then, I've had it once, but it came back possibly twice  it can come back numerous times, some people who suffer with stress can have regular "attacks", and some quite severe.
