Do people really look at flyers through the door or do most get thrown in the bin? We are contemplating running one but having the design and distribution done is no cheap thing!

Anyone had good feedback from doing a flyer campaign?

It really depends on various factors, not least, what you are advertising ad to whom, and where.

An A5 double sided flyer design can cost anywhere form £50-£100 depending who you use. I pay £65. Shared distribution is usually around £20-£25 per thousand. They say a flyer response is averaged at 1% but it can vary.

From personal experience and from many email newsletters I subscribe to, the conclusion that many have come to is

"for most small businesses, advertising is the least effective way to grow a business".

I've spent £500 on an ad in a local magazine with a circulation of 10,000 and had zero replies. I've spend £300 to print and have delivered over 5,000 leaflets with just 1 solitary response!

I've also been scammed out of £600 for an ad at Sheffield SKI Village. NB this was NOT the fault of the Ski Village, but the company concerned arranged things so it looked like everything was approved and vetted by them. We met there and I was introduced to the General Manager, but in fact the Ski Village were part victims to the fraud themselves.

I have a friend who paid £500 for a display in Yellow Pages. He generally does his own cold calling, but if he receives an enquiry he always asks where the caller saw or heard about him. Again ONE person said Yellow Pages.

You have to do something to gain attention though. Many businesses see the competitors advertise and think it must work - otherwise why would they do it? - therefore they copy everyone's mistake.

I was once considering an ad in a specialist magazine but took the time to phone existing advertisers and ask politely "does this work for you". There was no hesitation in telling me "NO".

You know we all hate cold callers. Do you know why companies continue to do it? It gets results! I briefly worked for a company selling Private Medical Insurance and they had acall centre of about 40 people constantly calling businesses to arrange appointments for reps. It was an expensive set up but it got results.

I guess you should ask yourself the question how many flyers do you read and respond to?

Don't be sucked into the "Are you reading this? Then so are your customers" line. You're tuned in to something that your customers aren't.

You'll find interesting reading if you Google "advertising doesn't work" including tips on how to write better ads if you do decide to give it a go.

I look at flyers for fast-food joints, on the grounds that any of them which is advertising at my house, will surely deliver to my house.

Everything else gets binned without a reading. So in general, I'd say no they don't work.

1 response from 200 is a reasonable return, personally I feel that you need to issue about 5000 to get a more accurate measurement.

The only way to find out if a flyer works is to have a special offer that only applies to that flyer.
