Assad got into power by way of the coup by his father.

The election he had for staying in power was only carried out by his supporters so the result was obvious if no one is in a position to stand against you.

the idea that Bashar got into power by democratic process is just laughable.

Bashar's dad Hafez used to have 'elections' too, which he always won by ludicrously large margins.

after one of them so the story goes, he asked his aides what the result of the election was, and he was told he'd got 99.8% of the vote, and that 9 million people had voted for him.

but Hafez said he wasn't pleased.

an aide protested, saying 'Sir, 9 million people voted for you in the election. That means that only 25,000 people didn't. What more do you want?'
