Internet accessible webcam?

I am wondering how hard it is to set up a decent quality (eg 720p or better) webcam that is internet accessible to anyone

Assume the hardware bit is easy (ie we already have a Logitech HD920) but don't know how to get an IP address for it - or any of the other technical stuff really

You will need a IP Can for what you want to do.. This would plug directly into your router, and have it's own IP address..

Currently, your camera plugs into ur computer, so you will need yo leave that on at all times for the camera to be accessible.... There's lots of software available to stream to the web...

Have a search for "TP Link IP camera", cheap and cheerful.

If you want to use your existing equipment then I can recommend YAWCAM. We used that to stream a live feed from a birdbox.

Lots of them only do local recording, and don't allow you to broadcast out of the property..

This isn't a problem if you set up some remote software like PCAnywhere or a WinVNC or something, but your computer will need to be on at all times...

the benefit of an IP cam is the little power usage compared to leaving a full computer on all the time..

You can just use that webcam with some software like yawcam. No need for ip cams.

Edit:Just read the above, YAWCAM does have a built in webserver so is internet accessible.

For what purpose are you looking to use a webcam?? If its for video chat then use skype or gmail, no need of IP for that. If it is required for live streaming, visit livestream.com and follow the instructions.

arcusuniv - well, if it isn't an unhelpful answer, I am not exactly sure what we want to do as I don't know what is actually possible

We have got a new webcam on a long lead and want to play. . . .

Having it look in the garden might be fun, especially if we can use motion tracking to trigger recording - we think we have foxes out there but don't know (it might just be small burglars on the prowl)

The reason for IP access was to see what else we could do online - eg the kids want to stream their fish tank to the world . . .

Being able to use webcam to record video is something the kids want to do too - so they can make youtube videos, multi-media homework and stuff

There is some free software that used to be called Vitamin D, that was excellent for motion capturing (not very good for online access).
