Was anyone involved with One-Eleven Motor Club.

You all seem to have forgotten Chris Mellors who won the British Rally Championship 3 times as a driver. He was my co-driver on a couple of events in a twin cam BRM engined Lotus 7. We didn't finish either. Too fast & too fragile.

Morts - yes brother Simon won the 'Jackson' * with Bob Wells in the Firenza, but I think it was sponsored by Radio Hallam by then. He also won the 'Dams' with Andy Blair in his Sunbeam Ti.

Chris Mellors only did a few road rallies (in a Mini Cooper 'S' he assembled in Tommy Wilson's greenhouse!) before he built his first Escort - a blue Twin Cam. The rest, as they say, is history. Incidentally his son Oliver, just 17, is starting out in the forests, and is very promising. Watch this space................

* It might have been a Border CC event, I will check.

This forum has prompted me to dig out some photographs from back in my One Eleven days. Some are prints and some are 35mm transparencies (anybody still use them?). Having gone through them I decided to scan some and put them on a website to share the memories and perhaps attract others who have memories of those days. The site I have put together is here http://www.lincolnshirephotographic.com/index.html Please feel free to view and comment.

Some great memories there Roger. There must be plenty more photos out there of cars and rallies in the 70s. You could have started something there!

Just heard The Who singing I Can See For Miles. Did anyone see the Barry Hinchcliffe film it Started From Harrogate on the1971 RAC Rally. The Who sang the soundtrack. Remember the divers by the bridge at Esholt (or was it Harewood) and Peter Clark in an RS Escort going straight into a lake.

The film is still available-a deffo for Christmas!

Had a look on You Tube as well. Some good footage from that era.

Did anyone go watching the RAC when it was a five day event? I think it was about five hours sleep per night, nothing like the modern two day shoot outs. The heroes-Roger Clark, Tony Foulkes, Tony Fall, Nigel Rockey, Will Sparrow, Andy Dawson

Just had a look at your photos, never taken part in an event which used Spitfire Bottom but have spectated on the bridge several time... Happy times.

The Magnum looks fine, at a time when Sheffield had two Vauxhaul Dealerships Bentley & Turret. The Magnum in action could well be at Kirton Quarry, in North Lincolnshire. I cannot read the rally plates.

The Pete Well Mk II Escort looks like Jonty Bolsover is on the maps, Pete Wells always put a show on in the Derbyshire lanes!

Although when I was active in One-Eleven my first choice was road rallies, I also did single venue stage events & whatever else was being organised.

I did my fair share of road rally PR, never easy trying to get consent! Also marshalling on loads of road event & of course The RAC at Chatsworth.

Been trying to think of other names from the late 1970s, grey matter not giving me answers at the moment.

Happy days

Just heard The Who singing I Can See For Miles.

What a coincidence I have just bought 'From Harrogate it Started', it certainly roused some memories.

I remember marshalling the RAC in Clipstone and then following through the Yorkshire Moors, The Lake District and into Wales. Other years I went to Trentham, Harewood and a park in north Manchester - the name escapes me.

I used to regularly watch The Manx, Tour of Mull and The Scottish where Russell Brookes rolled on a bend - willing hands turned him upright and he went on his way!

Did anyone else watch the Avon/Motor Tour of Britain all the way round?

We would hire Transit vans from Smiths at Thrybrough because no one in Sheffield would hire them to us on RAC week. We followed the full event. Yorkshire, Scotland, Wales even down to Devon on occasions. We cooked beans on a Primus Stove as we drove. Took it in turns to try to sleep. One year we had around 3 inches of ice from condensation inside van.

Does anyone remember Andy Greenwood and Dave Szupack(?) ?

The first time I met Andy Greenwood was at the first motor club event that I marshalled, it was a NMMC production car trial held at Elton. Andy entered in a 'sit up and beg' Ford popular.

His mother worked for my business for many years.

The last I heard he was living in the Oxford area with his wife and kids - he's probably a grandfather by now!

Hi

I was one of the original comitee members of the one-eleven. It was formed by members of the C.A.M.D.A Sheffield branch as we wanted something more motorsport oriented. Other original members as I remember not mentioned so far were Eric Lowkes, Harvey Smith, Dave Roberts (unbeatable in his mini in Autotests) , Ted Wren

Just read that Bjorn Waldegard has passed away. I think it was Ironmongery in a very early post made mention of the Lancia Stratos in Clipstone....that would be him. I think he was in an accident very early in one RAC Rally that completely took off the rear body work exposing the engine. He was excluded but Lancia lodged an appeal much to the delight of the spectators who were able to see what, at the time, was the ultimate rally machine...naked.

RIP
