Ferret breeding season

Recommended Posts

Just a bit of a reminder for those of us with Female ferrets, and new owners that may not know.

Un-spayed Females will now be in season, please please do not leave them in season it is very detrimental to your ferrets health and can even cause death in a surprisingly fast amount of time.

If you are not breeding them (not the best idea, very costly and many ferrets can die/lose litters quite easily) then there are 3 very good alternatives.

1- Jill jab, from the vet, pretty cheap and will last a few months but can have side effects.

2- Hormone implant, IMO the best thing, lasts 2-3 years and no side effects...but can be expensive.

3-Spaying, the permanent solution but the ferret will need one of the above to bring her out of season first, it can cause health problems in later life, so spaying alongside the implant is the very best method.

Some people use a vasectomised Hob, this will work but causes other problems and there is always the risk of the vasectomy reversing or infection.

Please do think of your ferrets, they are only small but they have feelings and deserve good care like other pets.

Well thought Moonbird, such a complicated yet lovable and so abused pet. At least you have summed it up and if people shop around they can get reasonable prices for neutering from vets.

Lets reduce unwanted babies and Jill deaths.

Thank you :)

There seems to be so many ferret kits about this year and so I suppose new ferret owners that wont know about it all, some say that ferrets will come out of season by themselves but really many many Jills do die every year its not worth the risk and its a horrible way to die, not to mention the fact that its so needless.

The worst thing about ferrets is their reproductive months I think, they are complicated animals for that time...we had 2 little Jills that both had pyometra last year and almost died, and others with similar problems, if they had been spayed or implanted it would never have happened.
