TimmyR   10 #14 Posted January 16, 2017 (edited) A single asbestos fibre can cause the above mentioned cancer in the same way that a single cigarette can cause lung cancer but its an extremely low risk until you breathe in lots of fibres. People who develop said cancer or asbestosis have generally worked in environments where they have breathed in a lot of the fibres. Given the prevalence of asbestos until 1999 and the fact that it exists naturally there's a high chance that every one of us has breathed in the odd fibre. I think people need to put this into perspective a bit. See here:  https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/substances/asbestos/asbestos-fact-sheet  "Who is at risk for an asbestos-related disease? Everyone is exposed to asbestos at some time during their life. Low levels of asbestos are present in the air, water, and soil. However, most people do not become ill from their exposure. People who become ill from asbestos are usually those who are exposed to it on a regular basis, most often in a job where they work directly with the material or through substantial environmental contact."  And so to conclude, taking a sample from some asbestos in your house is very unlikely to kill you.  This sort of hyper-worrying about asbestos is how asbestos removal firms get away with charging ludicrous sums to take samples.
