Identity fraud/ sale by villains

Recommended Posts

BBC News today reports http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-38080102 an attempted forgery/fraudster sale.

HM Land Registry partly created this risk by rushing to 'dematerialise' registered titles.

But there are steps that one can take to minimise the risk faced by absentee owners (whether just living abroad or subletting). See HMLR advice concerning form RQ: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/restriction-by-owner-not-living-at-property-request-registration-rq

The owners weren't absentee though, the criminals were rifling through their mail and stealing their identity.

It's quite scary how easy it is to steal someones identity.

Yes; and easy- it seems- to forge documentation that appears real.

Some are ridiculously easy.

I mean a 5 year old could photoshop any name into a utility bill, and thats widely accepted as proof of residence.

Couple that with some dodgy forged passports or something off the internet and you're away.
