in theory, the UK could absorb greater numbers. But why on earth should it? The changes that are required to make the waves of immigration productive, enriching or even tolerable are patently not going to happen. So the sensible solution is to stop it now, and stop pretending that everything is OK because of some exercise in statistical rationalisation.
