You can't shave a German shepherd. I don't think any self respecting dog groomer would do more than attempting to thin his top coat out and rake out some of his undercoat.

If he's too hot make sure he's got plenty of water, a shady place to lay and get a fan. Instead of paying a groomer you could Get a furminator brush, spend a good hour brushing him through and this will remove a fair bit of the loose fur in his coat.

Agree with the other posters, you hould never ever clip a double coat, unless there is a severe health reason and the vet has advised it but that's extreme and very rare.

A well groomed double coat is made up of two layers, the wavy undercoat that sheds and the long smooth top coats known as guard hairs. In good condition the coat does a perfect job of regulating the dogs temperature by trapping warm air when cold and allowing cool air to flow through when hot. A dog will pant when it's hot to lose heat, that's what they're supposed to do. A wise dog will also take it easy if they're mind and body is stimulated :)

If the coat becomes heavy with dead hair or is matted, the coat will struggle to do is job and a professional groom will help a lot. As mentioned above, rakes, combs and slickers will help removed the coat and for heavy coats coat kings help too.

If you remove the dogs coat with clippers, you remove the dis ability to regulate it's own body temperature and can also expose it to sunburn and remove it's natural protection against bushes etc.

Exactly what mike84 said.......don't ever shave your Gsd.

Lots of brushing, plenty on shade and water, hose him down if he likes it to cool him off x

B&M have some rubber chew things that you fill with water and freeze only a couple of quid.

Our GSDs are outside dogs so they have really thick coats. They can get into various areas of shade, lay on grass, wooden pallet or cold hard floors either in or out of breeze. We do give them an unused plasters bath to cool off as a paddling pool. We put a fan on in which they can sit near when we are around to supervise. I'm sure your dog will be fine.

Ours loves water and has a few tricks of his own - he deliberately tips his water bowl over in the kitchen and lays in the puddle on the tiled floor

Not sure of a fan works for dogs like it does people as dogs dont sweat

We also use the watering can to cool a little or the hose for a messy cooling play time. Be careful with super soaker style water guns though, ours grabs the nozzle where the water comes out - and thats where your hand is - and it hurts

On serious hot days we drive to a nearby river (with the air con on) and he happily jumps in before dozing in the shade

Dogs 'sweat' by losing heat and moisture through their mouth. Ours do sit in front of the fan when it's on so it must help cool them. Their fur is much thinner in their muzzle and it dies cool their fur if you put your hand on then. Ours rarely sit near the fire but will find a cool spot.

When we had a long haired that was truly exhausted in the heat. We bathed him. Used a silky shampoo and conditioner andca furminator to remove a lot of dead undercoat

Blast off with the booster dryers too

If really desperate. Clip under belly. It gives some relief in this heat. These thick coated dogs are pitiful in our heat. They were never meant to be in temperatures like here over 14degrees even

We have given belly clips. Some people are horrified bit the cost grows back fine and the dogs are happier

Poor things.
