How did you decide what job you wanted to do/have?

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering how did you know what career you wanted to do?

Yes there is a thread on this but its an old one and its an interesting subject as to I am in the same position as the person who asked it I am in the same boat as he was

Forced into it by parents, regret giving in now every single day, still carry a grudge about it with my parents.

I wanted to be a plumber but I could not get an apprenticeship. At the time in 1972 there was a building boom on and brickies was earning in todays money £600-700 a week so the £ signs made me go into construction. Then in 73 the boom went bust and wages became normal.

Would I do it again? Yes and no. The pride of workmanship and the fact those bricks will still be there for decades to come. No because it is damn hard on the body and so in-secure from November till March. The earnings over a year doesn't make having this skill worth while.

A soldier! I always wanted to be a soldier I suppose every boy does. But I never grew out of it

I spent 22 wonderful years that I would not change for anything.

After retiring I spent a couple of years as a private military contractor before coming home and going in to another job that I love.

I suppose I have been lucky in that I have never had a job where I have thought " I don't want to go in to work today"

I would like to thank you for spending such a large part of your life putting yourself in harm's way defending the rest of us from the various people in the world who wish us harm.

It's great to hear that it was a good fit for you as well.

I fell into it by fortuitous accident.

After 15 years in the game, I have yet to meet anyone (in this country or overseas) who set out to be a patent agent from the get-go, and didn't likewise fall into the profession by accident.

You could perhaps change careers now, unless it is a very specialized stream and you have been at it very long?

Royal Navy for me! Always wanted a blast on a nuclear submarine. Signed my life away, loving every minute until I was faced with a medical discharge (dodgy ear)or an office based posting. I chose to get out (gutted) but no way wanting to be behind a desk for 24 years.

Finished up in export for 13 years (Marks n Sparks) then decided Health and Social Care was where I wanted to be. Did all the study bla bla bla, worked my way up and now back behind a bloody desk.

Hey, at least I got the looks (and the modesty, yes :hihi:), if I'd wanted to try my hand at the male escort game :P

...I hear squids in subs retain that pasty look and faint glow for a long time? :D

Trying to as we speak, but finding it very hard, as will still have bills and rent to pay, tried for grants and other sources of funding but not one for me out there, so I rather need to find money from nowhere.

i must be as random as they come. i got sponsorship as a student and should have gone to work for a large sheffield engineering company. however due to a strike i was released from my obligation. the personel manager from said concern had moved on to a very specialised manufacturer and he rang me to offer a job. i thought it worth a try.

the company was quickly taken over by a large multinational who stuck me on a share option scheme which did rather well and allowed me to take over a subsiduary company which i ran until i sold out and moved on to internet trading.
