Taking child protection too far ??

Recommended Posts

A school has sacked a dinner lady who exposed their cover up of a serious bullying incident. A girl was tied to a fence and whipped with skippimg ropes by four boys, yet the school advised the parents by letter that their daughter had suffered 'an accident' with a skipping rope.

The dinner lady has now been banned from her involvement in the local beaver scout group and local youth support group. It also turns out that one of the boys involved is the son of a school governor. The dinner lady has not revealed the names of the boys involved but in any case they seem to be well known in the local community.

School bullying is an intractible problem that the authorities seem unable and unwilling to tackle effectively. Vindictively sacking employees who expose it is simply stupid and raises obvious questions about the competence of the head teacher involved.

Quite right too. A dinner lady's job is to serve food in the canteen, not snoop around the playground looking for things to report. It's got nothing to do with her.

It is despicable greybeard, just shows how corrupt our society is, morality is becoming non - existant. whistle blowers should be protected by law but unfortunately this is not the case.

Why's it worry you? Do you think that anyone who doesn't parrot the Sun leader column must automatically be a peado?

Since when was it a dinner lady's job to snoop around and try to do the job of a teacher?

A shame you don't know about the "Every Child Matters" strategy that everyone who works with, near or around children must adhere to.

That's the problem with forums: ignorant armchair commentators get to have their say without any knowledge of a subject.

This case in point has nothing to do with child protection, it has everything to do with governor image protection because as you said one of the kids who was involved was the son of one of the governors. Disgraceful.

There's also the issue of LAs over protecting head teachers (to the point of making large payouts when parents try to obtain recourse to the failings through the courts - ie making offers of payment before the court date).

Yes, I can walk down any street I choose and see them with my own eyes. I can get on a bus that may have children on it, I can even go into a shop or cinema that may have children inside. Disgusting, isn't it?

Why does that concern you?

Possibly...but the excuse for the disciplinary action was that she had breached child 'confidentiality'. The more obvious reason is that she had, and then only to a parent of the victim - surely an interested party and entitled to know the full facts, exposed the blatant lie told by the head teacher (assuming it was she who wrote the letter to the parent).

It's also noteworthy that at the disciplinary hearing the school authorities had legal representation, a facility that was denied to the dinner lady.
