Injured wood pigeon/dove

Recommended Posts

We've had a couple of these in our garden for several years now, not sure whether they're wood pigeons or collared doves. Tonight one of them is wandering about unable to fly, and has taken refuge under a bush; there's a flurry of feathers down the garden too so I figure he's been got by a cat. No sign of his mate either.

What should I do with him - anything, or should I leave him where he is? I don't think his long term prospects are very good given the number of cats that roam our garden, but if I catch him, what can I do with him?

You can take him to a local vet, and they will take care it for free - they do with wildlife.

I took one once that was injured by a car, if they cannot treat them, at least they are humanely put to sleep.

He's spent all day ensconced under the bush; I put him some water down and he's still alive. Unfortunately so well is he ensconced that I can't reach him at the moment, so I don't have much choice except to leave him where he is for now.

He's spent all weekend wandering around the garden and remarkably hasn't fallen foul of any of the local wildlife. I finally caught him tonight and I've put him in the greenhouse in a cardboard box with a bowl of water. I'll see if I can find a vet to get him to tomorrow morning, if Glennis's assertion is correct.
