storrs girl   10 #7 Posted December 30, 2013 Hello Fleetwood, My late father-in-law worked at the Grand Hotel during the period you mention. However his name was John Pattinson (not Pattinson) and he lived in Pitsmoor.  ---------- Post added 30-12-2013 at 15:18 ----------  Hi Should have said Pattinson not Patterson. fleetwood   10 #8 Posted December 30, 2013 You maybe correct on the spelling and it might be the same person, I only know that his son Mick was a terrific pianist who died tragically far too young. What part of Pitsmoor are you talking about? The family when I knew them lived, not far from Spital Hill off the main Rd on the left hand side heading towards Firvale.  ---------- Post added 31-12-2013 at 15:35 ----------  Hello Fleetwood, My late father-in-law worked at the Grand Hotel during the period you mention. I had met his family and worked and socialised with Mick after I got out of the Forces doing my National Service. Must remember his name was Pattinson not Patterson though. John Ashmore   10 #11 Posted March 2, 2014 I worked at the Grand during the 1960's .I was a hair stylist in M/Dalton's branch at the Grand Any clients requiring drinks were served by two waiters from the hotel .One was called Ian ,the other called Stuart .However I cannot recall any surnames . I worked at the Grand Hotel as a porter in 1965. I was only 15 at the time. The Head Porter was Mr Fleming. He was quite strict but very fair. I have so many memories from then. It was a very interesting job. I used to work split shifts. It wouldn’t be allowed now. My tips exceeded my wages, I couldn’t have managed otherwise. There was Johnnie Spitzer in room 341. He was a character. Once gave me 6d. I remember Kathy Kirby going into Marjorie Daltons. She told me someone was following her. I wouldn’t have blamed them if they were. All the groups used to stay there when appearing at the City Hall. I would have loved to work in the kitchens but seeing the way the commie chefs used to get shouted at, frightened me to death. I did go back there in 1967, working under Dennis Wilson as Head Porter. Nice chap. He used to pop across to the Three Tunns from time to time. When I finished my shift, I collected glasses down stairs in the Buccaneer Bar. Oh to be young again. I’ll shut up now
 Share this content via...
sheffsueme   10 #12 Posted March 24, 2014 Grand Hotel, what a lovely hotel that was in the early/mid 1960s, from the outside, that is. My school friends & I used to wait outside hoping to get autographs from pop stars who were staying there. We were once amongst a huge crowd of screaming teenagers, Helen Shapiro was staying there & we had tickets to see her on stage at the City Hall that night. Helen was a teenage schoolgirl herself then. She was staying in a room very high up (it seemed that way back then), Helen opened a window & waved to the crowd below & threw out (machine) autographed photos of herself, they rained down. I was lucky to catch one, I still have it in my autograph book.  One time we were waiting outside the main back door of the Grand, hoping to get some pop stars autograph when a group of older American men in suits came out. We didn't know who they were, but I asked one of them (in my innocence), "Are you somebody", (or was it are you anybody). LOL  Another time my friends & I were at the front door hoping to see Bobby Vee & get his autograph. We managed to get in the front door & ran like mad down the main corridor chasing after someone. We were thrown out but I did get Bobby Vee's autograph that night at the City Hall. What a great singer he was.  ---------- Post added 24-03-2014 at 22:26 ----------  Hi, The Michael you refer to was my 1st husband who was tragically killed in a cycling accident in 1990. The Bentley family were neighbours & good friends of my Grandparents. Keith & my Aunt were of a similar age. Keith used to work for the gas company. A few years ago I heard he was playing piano at a restaurant near Rotherham.
 Share this content via...
