RIP George Michael

Recommended Posts

never especially liked his music at all, but it has to be said that when he got busted in Beverly Hills in 1998 it was a really pivotal moment for gays in Britain at least - if not in the US.

he must have woken up and thought his whole world had been destroyed only he found looking at the British newspapers, that nobody could care less if he was a gay or not. In the 1990s, attitudes towards gays had changed a great deal only it took George's Beverly Hills bust, to highlight it.

he should have come out sooner.

One of the reasons why George Micheal didn't come out earlier was fear. Remember when Wham was in the charts the AIDs crisis was in full flow gay people were blamed for the disease that seemed unstoppable the media and TV ads of the time were full of stories of horror not really a great time to say ' by the way I'm gay' the media would have gone into over drive that would have ended George's career. Aside this factor coming out is an personal journey fear of rejection from family and friends on finding out the truth been an superstar who's life watched by the media undoubtedly made things even harder for him. The paradox of George Micheal is he gave hints in is ' Older' album of 1997 songs like ' Fastlove' a song about one night stands cruising into the dark for fastlove the album hints of an gay man feeling trapped but one song ends with the lyrics ' I'm free' that suggest he's come to terms with his sexuality.
