banjodeano   31 #1 Posted March 28, 2017 (edited) I was reading this article the other day.. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/what-lies-beneath-mossdale-caving-disaster-794268.html this is an amazing story, but why anyone would want to squeeze themselves into a space 10inch by 2feet for 900 yards is beyond me, (EDIT 900feet not yards) added to the fact that the tunnel can and did flood, that sounds like my worst nightmare, any cavers on here? and what risks do you take? Obelix   11 #2 Posted March 28, 2017 The low fatality rate in caving is perhaps proof of the risks that are (not) taken and how well they are managed.  Mossdale (I've not read the article but 2 foot by 1 foot by 900 yds(sure you don't mean feet?) sounds like the Marathon or Far Marathon to me) is a bit of a special cave that's not that representative of most caves. Besides im too big to fit in there. But if you consider that more people have walked on the Moon than have got to the back of Mossdals high mud caverns, theres one answer as to why people do it.   Now if you really want the insane ones, cave diving is the way to go
 Share this content via...

I once recall reading that Americans GI volunteers used to go into the tunnels with a pistol in Vietnam to flush out the Vietnamese fighters, i think some people are just wired up different to the rest of us
 Share this content via...
alchresearch   214 #4 Posted March 28, 2017 (edited) I don't do caves but abandoned mines are amazing. Google image search "milwr tunnel"   Now if you really want the insane ones, cave diving is the way to go  Really creepy when they do the flooded mine workings and there's machinery and even buildings under the water!  https://i.ytimg.com/vi/v5oUxJX1Uqo/maxresdefault.jpg  https://diversofthedark.com/ng/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Ojamo_1.jpg Edited March 28, 2017 by alchresearch
 Share this content via...

barleycorn   10 #6 Posted March 28, 2017 I used to do it back in my Uni days. The main reason was because it was fun. It's not all crawling through narrow tunnels half full with water, there's also abseiling down 50m shafts with a waterfall landing on your head with the happy knowledge you're going to have to go back up.
