md00071 10 #49 Posted August 21, 2012 unisol - each to their own but uneducated waffle like 'overrated' cannot go unchallenged. McCartney has sold over 100 million albums and over 100 million singles. He is this country's most successful songwriter. Sure, feel free to dislike him and his music but cut the 'overrated' claptrap. Hear hear. One thing people tend to forget is just how prolific the Beatles were. In the modern era, bands forge entire careers on a couple of decent singles and a couple of decent albums (Blur, Pulp, Oasis, and every single big band there has been in the 2000s). The Beatles managed to produce, for the most part of their career, a brilliant album every SIX months. This was certainly the case in the mid-60s. When was the last time the Stones made a decent record? 1983? The Who? Mid-70s at best. His performance at the Olympics was misjudged. Hey Jude is an anti-climax now, because most people have bellowed it out drunk at least once. I remember the street parties in my local village at midnight on the night of the Queens 50th Jubilee in 2002. 2000 people singing in the streets was an experience i'll never forget, and no performance of Hey Jude will ever match it for me. But is it not beyond the realms of possibilty that he was asked to do that song by the organisers? Something uptempo would have been much better. (Live and Let Die, Jet, Get Back, Helter Skelter - take your pick). The guy is a musical genius, always was, still is. PS Ousetunes. The Smiths are the only band who have ever come near the Beatles for proliferation. How many great singles, albums and B-Sides in 5 years? It'll never happen again. Ousetunes 10 #50 Posted August 21, 2012 md00071 - My record collection is mainly Beatles and solo Beatles, The Smiths and Morrissey. After these - and there's enough here to last a lifetime - it's Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Beethoven and Dvorak. Frankly I feel I don't need any other music mainly because nothing comes close to the output of those listed above.
 Share this content via...
muddycoffee 10 #51 Posted August 21, 2012 (edited) .. Like most celebs, highly overrated. How can McCartney be a celeb. Celebs are people who have no talent or noticable value that are "celeb"rated by the media industry for the sake of it. Pretty much the opposite of Paul McCartney. Who has been a million selling artist for 50 years and an influence to millions of of musicians. Even if you don't like him you have to agree with this point. It is a statistical fact. johncocker 10 #52 Posted August 22, 2012 Asides his musical talent, that constant gaumless look in his face makes me feel ill. Like most celebs, highly overrated. overrated:suspect: In 1965 McCartney wrote “Yesterday,” which the Guinness Book of World Records says is the most covered song ever. It has been covered more than 3,000 times and in the 20th century alone the song was performed more than 7 million times.
 Share this content via...
irenewilde 10 #53 Posted August 25, 2012 Asides his musical talent, that constant gaumless look in his face makes me feel ill. Like most celebs, highly overrated. Ridiculous. He changed popular music in this country and has written some of the greatest songs ever. And it's 'gormless' incidentally.
 Share this content via...
Mrs Overall 10 #54 Posted August 26, 2012 Whatever he was like in the past,( and I was a Beatles fan) he was absolute garbage at the Queens Jubilee, heard he was just as bad at the Olympics ceremony.. It's about time he hung up his guitar, stopped dyeing his hair and grew up!
 Share this content via...
janie48 95 #55 Posted August 26, 2012 I've just heard him singing that lovely song "Till there was you", not his own composition though, but It prompted me to look up some details. Rupert_Baehr 10 #58 Posted August 27, 2012 Aside from his Beatles work has Paul McCartney ever done anything decent? I never fail to be astounded at how terrible his performances / songs are- it's almost embarrasing watching him. Does he just trade on his (long) past glory or do i just not appreciate good music? Pretty stupid question, really. "Aside from his boxing work, did Cassius Clay / Mohammed Ali really do anything decent?" "Aside from her Olympian work, did Jessica Ennis really do anything decent?" McCartney is a Musician/Songwriter/Player /Singer and an old fart. He's old., he's not very well, He can't sing. Muhammed Ali used to be a pretty competent boxer. if you put him in a ring today, do you think he could knock the skin off a rice pudding? He's old, he's not very well, he can't fight. Was Muhammed Ali ever any good? Was he ever the best in his class? Was he ever one of the world's best boxers? I don't know. Probably 'Yes' on all 3 counts. Was McCartney ever any good? Was he ever an accomplished songwriter? Was he ever rated (amongst) the best in his class? [musicians tend not to 'duke it out' to see who is absolutely the best ] Was he ever one of the world's best musicians? I don't know. Probably 'Yes' on all 3 counts. So what's the point of this thread? Cheap point scoring?
 Share this content via...
