I am doing a project for the course I'm doing (ICDH) and would be interested to hear what people think of the manor area and why? Thanks for reading.

What does ICDH stand for? We don't know if you mean in relation to housing, layout, services, people, crime levels, history. Help us out here.

Chez,

Housing

Very good on the whole, much better since the demolision of the 1920s houses. The new build around Fairleigh etc looks very smart.

Layout
Excellent. Manor/Manor Park is not what you would call a 'typical' Inner city area in terms of layout. AFAIK, there are no terraced housing. Most houses have large garden areas and there is acres of green space - having said this, some of the green areas have become run down and look a mess. Roads also need attention, alot of the minor roads seem to be made out of concrete slabs?

Services

First Class.

3 different GP surgeries (Manor Top, White House, Manor Park Centre), Dentist, Chemists, local shops, Supermarket, Takeaways, Hairdresses, Large Sports Centre, Primary and Secondary School, Youth Clubs - etc etc etc.

People

I might be abit biased here but most people are friendly, approachable and have a strong sense of community spirit.

Crime

I dont know statistics for crime in the area but Im sure you could explore this. I would guess that it is higher than some areas of the city but lower than others.

Summary

I guess that most people have preconceptions of the Manor, not helped by the media and the way it portrays it. The Star is one of the biggest offenders, last month there was a feature on ASB and the pictures they showed were of the Manor Park Centre PRIOR to the revamp so it looked how they wanted it too. Another picture was of some kids jumping on a bus shelter - it wasnt even on the Manor (Wybourn).

There has been alot of money pumped into this area - most of which has been good and well use. I suppose it doesnt matter what 'other'people think about an area, the only opinions that count are from those who live there - and I wouldnt be willing to bet that the vast majority of Manor folk you speek to would say they love the place.

Mat

I have just spent the last 7 years working on the (lower) Manor, the area near Pipworth/Waltheof Schools.

The area does seem to have had a lot of money directed at various schemes over the recent years, but it has done nothing to improve the outlook for the younger members of the community. The area is plagued by a violent, lawless minority whos' only object in life appears to be to thwart all the hard work that is done by the local community groups.

This can be seen in the crime and vandalism that occurs daily in the area - I have not seen anything in 'The Star' that I couldn't relate to. This minority have no respect for the residents, the workers, the people who try to improve their lives and are quite happy to give the appearance that they care whilst laughing behind the backs of authority.

I'm very glad you used the word minority. The manor is a big place and not every bit is that bad fortunately! I have heard bad things about that part myself, but I think you'll find that the majority of people would prefer to improve the area as a whole.

Yes, very definitely a minority, a VERY low percentile of the overall population. However, the amount of trouble that this minority seem able to cause in relation to their numbers is extraordinary and they also seem able to easily introduce new members to the 'fold'.

the Manopr is a large area and a small bit of it is full of idiots. It is affordable and friendly. Live in a bad bit and yes it is bad. Most of it is affordable and fine.

Just a thought, but if you did a search for 'Manor' on the site it might bring up something.

Thats all well and good - but who in their right mind would want to live in a place thats got the reputation that the manor has?
Not me personally- I cant abide the place.

Layout
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So its basically a **** tip then?

Services

First Class.

3 different GP surgeries (Manor Top, White House, Manor Park Centre), Dentist, Chemists, local shops, Supermarket, Takeaways, Hairdresses, Large Sports Centre, Primary and Secondary School, Youth Clubs - etc etc etc.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now you have got all this @ the manor--
so please tell me why you still have the yobs around the area?
Most places dont have a large sports centre and youth clubs.. especially from where I just moved from.. and we dont have the trouble that you have. Wonder why that is.

People

I might be abit biased here but most people are friendly, approachable and have a strong sense of community spirit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then on the other side of the coin - you get the yobbo element who are making the manor a **** tip.
Community spirit!

Crime

I dont know statistics for crime in the area but Im sure you could explore this. I would guess that it is higher than some areas of the city but lower than others.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
You well know how bad the manor is - as do many people on this forum-- its a **** tip. I would not want to even walk round the place never mind live there with a family.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Its still a **** place to live though is it not?
Many people who have the choice would not move into the area due to the fact that its reputation stinks .. and it aint the media giving it the bad rep- its the idiot element that live there.

There has been alot of money pumped into this area - most of which has been good and well use.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drugs purposes mainly -- and also the cash that comes in from stolen goods- dont forget that.

I suppose it doesnt matter what 'other'people think about an area,
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, yeah it does matter really-- cos the idiots in the manor are the ones that are spoiling sheffield in a way, and that means people are going to be put off living there... so the area is just going to get worse and worse is it not?

The only opinions that count are from those who live there - and I wouldnt be willing to bet that the vast majority of Manor folk you speek to would say they love the place.
Mat
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That may be right what you say about the 'manor peoples' views counting -- thats probably because you want to whitewash the fact that you live in a dump.
No offence again to the normal element of the manor - just the yobbo's again.

You have got the reputation of living in if not the worst area in sheffield to live.. but have a happy new year though!
Hope things get a hell of a lot better for you round there.

Bless.

It's your kind of ignorance I can do without!! How dare you say I live in a dump!! I have lived here 2 years and my house is very nice as are the houses around mine. Unless you have walked the streets and looked at every house you have NO right to comment!!!!! I moved here from a very respectable area in Blackpool and have experienced no trouble at all. I get on with my neighbours and have made some very good friends since moving here. Like I said don't judge people with your own ignorant opinions!!! Some parts of manor are quite bad but I can assure you I do not live in a dump!!! I started this thread to help me with a project I am doing, not for you to be insulting to people.

Like I said the minority are causing the problem.
And please dont be offended if you are not one of the yobbo's as my views were intirely intended for them.

I've got to ask though-- why move from a respectable area in blackpool to the manor though?

No offence again so please dont take it as such.
