Anyone worked at Firth Browns?

Recommended Posts

Hi Brian,

I only knew the shop on the pic which was up on the hillside between Carwood Road and Garter Street. There were no rail lines in there in my time. :)

Peter.

Yes, I looked on a OS map from 1955 and the only rail line that crossed a main street connecting FB premises was on Carlisle Street East between Atlas Street and Lyons Street. On the same map I saw 'Aetna Works', what was that about ?

Hi stpetre,

Spear and Jackson Aetna Works could be on the map you mention, according to the street names on these pics.....

Hi Peter, I sure over looked your thread and yes it a good picture,

I do remember them vans them battries were very popular in the

earlier years i bought many of them.

Are there any vans like that still about. Brian

Hi Brian,

I believe the van sales force ended many years ago.

I was based at home at Bramley near Rotherham and the van was garaged in Rotherham along with a garage for stock which I ordered weekly. From 1966 to 1972 I covered Rotherham and outlying villages as far as and including Worksop. Also the edge of Sheffield including Wincobank, Firth Park, Page Hall and Fir Vale.

There were two vans in Sheffield and in 1972 I transfered to one of those areas, leaving in 1973 to become a sales representative with Izal, selling Kent Panda industrial floor maintenance equipment and based at Thorncliffe, Chapeltown. My area was then the whole of Yorkshire.

Hi Brian,

Yes, that pic is so clear that It brings the sights and sounds you mention back to me too. :)

I still intend to put one or two pics on that I snapped in 1990 when the works on Carlisle Street East had been demolished and cleared away.

Got to find them out and scan them, put them on Photobucket and transfer to Forum. Takes forever :hihi:

Yes, good old Vera!

Here are some pics I snapped in 1990 towards the end of demolition at Firth Browns.

Let's have a walk along Carlisle Street East from Carwood Road, past my little Metro Van- Den- Plas :) 27 years ago to Crown Hill.

Sadly it looks like the aftermath of a nuclear attack :(....

Looking at a recent Google Earth map (2016) at the former Firth-Brown premises between Carlisle Street East and Saville Street East, on the aptly named Atlas Way (for FB) there is a South Yorkshire Police complex. Anyone know what that's about as I don't see marked police vehicles outside ?

Hi Brian, I'm pleased that you liked the pics.

I haven't posted those photos before. They are prints that have been in a photo album for 27 years and have now been scanned to my hardrive and returned to rest in the album! :)

Yes, I do remember your post about the house on Scott Street next to the Alexandra Hotel. I was in the Boys Brigade only about 6 months from Sept. 1956.

If I remember rightly Colliery road goes off Brightside Lane & goes up, under the railway, onto Holywell Rd. We used to use it when we were kids trainspotting at Brightside station. I seem to think it was shut under the bridge some time later.

Hi all

Yes Colliery Road from where the pic was taken.

Brightside Lane / Weedon Steet/ Meadowhall Road junction

opposite the Bridge Inn.

It went from there 70/80 yatds or so and then under the main

LMS railway line then uphill to join Holywell Road

coming out opposite the cement works.

I walked that journey for many years to and from work

from where i lived directly opposite Henry Cooks Grange farm.

Through the farm via Colliery Rd / Weedon Street to Shepcote Lane.

In them days there was no bollards, it was a through road for traffic.

It was a very eerie walking journey at night going and passing under

the bridge which was not well lit, always damp and a journey not to be made alone.
