I spoke to Apple about this before.  Applecare does cover the charger - http://www.apple.com/support/products/mac.html  What’s covered — Mac  Your Mac computer Included accessories such as the power adapter Apple memory (RAM) AirPort2 Apple USB SuperDrive Apple display purchased with your Mac  Either way, OP advised that their's is out of warranty.  Best bet is to speak to Apple.
