£ Millions wasted as only 1 in 7 teachers finds a job.

Recommended Posts

Is it the SNP's fault? Is it the Scottish Offices fault or DIUS or whatever it is now, for over allocating funding to teacher training? is it Scottish local council's fault for not reducing class sizes yet?

1 in 7 not getting a permanent job is an impressive figure but it doesn't mean much. Is it not more normal now to offer fixed term contracts because they are better value for the tax-payer? If 6 in 7 have fixed term jobs then how is this is a waste for the tax-payer? i expect there is an issue here but the scale of the issue and who is responsible is not at all clear.

It says only 1 in 7 have secured a permanent post.

More than £60m has been spent training teachers who have little or no work, according to Scottish Labour.

We pay to train them and send them to the dole queues.

It's yet another one of those "Guess the point of Anarchist threads time"!

Now if he got out of the left side of the bed then he'll be arguing that kids aren't getting an Education or the poor teachers are unemployed, whereas if it was the right side he'll be arguing that people like him are paying taxes for what he sees as waste.

My money is on the former as being the point of this thread, I think it's the left leaning Anarchist arguing for better education for our kids.

I'm with you on this one lad!

The above article is regarding Scotland so doesn't reflect the English situation.

I think we still have something of a teaching shortage in Maths, Science and RE - increased funding for trainees in these subjects would seem to indicate this. However, by all accounts it's largely a better situation than a few years ago.

I'm training as a secondary History teacher. There is no shortage for the subject but a lot of History teachers are getting on, so something of a squeeze is expected soon - this may be the case for other areas. Similarly, training places have been cut from subjects like History and increased in the shortage areas. On my PGCE this year there will be a cohort of 9, which is remarkably small considering that Sheffield University is the only provider in quite a considerable area.

Aren't teachers trained in Scotland allowed to teach in England N.I. or Wales?

I presume there is still a shortage of maths/science teachers?

I think that there are plenty of jobs for maths, physics and chemistry teachers and more so down south. I'm guessing house prices prevent many from going down that way even though they get paid very slightly more.

Biology teachers are pretty common and it seems to be the science that most that chose to train as science teachers tend to be. About 8/6 years ago there were lots of jobs for science teachers in the Sheffield area but it does seem to have slowed down greatly this year. This either shows that the recruit drive over the last 8 years has worked or more teachers are now staying in teaching and less retiring.

I’ve noticed in science teaching there appears to be an age gap. There are lots of science teachers nearing retirement age and under 30 and only a few in the 48-33 age group.

Doh. I thought that is what I said. The not slipped in by accident.

This is what I meant to say:

Ah a typical titanic attack the poster and ignore the thread response. You really do need to get a life.

Regarding the point of the threads? I would have thought it pretty obvious. They repeatedly get right up your nose. Your identical response to each and every thread just shows I got it right again.

They really p*** you off don't they. :hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi:: So I'll just keep e'm coming. Prepare your sinuses old boy..:hihi::hihi:

Well if local authorities employed more teachers class sizes could be reduced to a more manageable size.

good idea - teach them in the car park?

Apologies if you felt attacked, will consider your sensitivity in future posts.

The problem with your post is that it doesn't say very much so I'll try a little harder then.

Do you think that these people should be used to reduce class sizes, or is it your gripe that we are spending money training these people onlyfor there to be no jobs for them.

Regarding your threads, keep them coming as we don't hear enough from politicians opposed to the Government so your threads help generate topical debate!

There are plenty of reasons why these teachers don't have a job, and it's not necessarily because there aren't enough places in schools.

Many teachers who qualify might want to find a school close to their home, or one that specialises in their chosen subject, or want to go back to the school where they did their training, or go to a school where there are career advancement prospects. Not to mention the salary offered by the headteacher.

When I graduated I was offered loads of places in schools, which I turned down (so I could be classed as one of those statistics), because most of them were in hell holes like Liverpool and Fazackerley (imagine the worse elements of the Manor, Parson Cross and Moss Side rolled into one and you're STILL not even close!)
