I believe that the church is currently between ministers, with the most recent leaving a week or so ago after a 15 year stint. Numerous attempts made over that time to manage the graveyard and huge improvements made during that time,. Of course, graveyards are public places and therefore probabaly incumbent on us all to do our bit to keep it tidy and acceptable, rather than just expect "others" to do it? I know that scout group next door did a fair bit of work some months ago as well, as suggested in another post, but this clearly needs an on-going vision and work programme in order to maintain it in a decent state.

For anyone who was interested there was a guided tour of the graveyard this afternoon (to follow the Scouts fair at the church hall) so I would imagine they might have tidied it up a bit since the start of this thread.

This thread reminds me of a fantastic summer a friend and I spent in the late 1960's clearing the then overgrown graveyard at Eccleshall Church. We found the switch for the microphones inside the church so would take a portable record player and spend lunchtimes playing music through the p.a. system (well it was soul music!). I can still remember the sound of Junior Walker's saxophone echoing through the church.

We also found where the vicar kept the key for the clock tower so would occasionally climb onto the roof to eat our sandwiches. I wonder if my "Up the Owls" still shows where I carved it into the flashings.

Despite the mischief we worked hard and everyone was pleased with the end result. I was going to suggest that some enterprising schoolchildren might try the same at the cemeteries mentioned in this thread but I suppose 'Health and Safety' would get in the way nowadays.

The graveyard has been tidied up by a magnificent effort from several people.
