Well the title says it all really!

I have had a little good luck with finances and now faced with a dilemma!

Should I go for the Land Rover car or the BMW motorbike???

All the pro's and con's say Land Rover, and my heart says both!

Just cannot decide, please help!

:)

Defender all the way !!!!!!

And you might live longer to enjoy it (and curse it, and fix it, and modify it, and hate it, and love it, etc.)

I've got the T Shirt, and wouldn't change a thing about them.

You will of course check all the things a 1996 needs doing have been done.

That's one tick for the Landy then.

Thanks!

1996 was a roughish' year I would look for, either a M,N,P,R reg' depending on price.

What would you consider need doing?

i'd go for gs, because its the right time of year for the prices to lower.

Landy every day of the week. The original 4x4`s and still the best.

It really depends on what you want to do, doesn't it? Travelling around Europe in a Defender is probably the worst plan ever, however if you are aiming to do some off-road courses than I wouldn't like to be on the BMW.

Yep, Landie. Series1 if you want something special, if not a Series2. Classic machines. Cheap to run, parts cheap, insurance too...

Landrover unless you have a serious leather fetish then of course it would be the bike.

On pre. 97 models (maybe even newer) check the rear crossmember, even if it looks ok from the back poke around behind it. If it's rotten get a good wad knocked off the price and have a new one welded on. That chap off Abbeydale Rd is good.

Obviously go along the whole chassis checking but especially the outriggers, the very front are a mud trap. Again not a big deal to put right but not at your expense.

Pay extra attention to the bulkhead, that is a big job to put right and I would walk away from any rust in this area, oddly the lower mileage ones seem to suffer more.

The engine and gearbox are bulletproof if well maintained so only normal checks needed there. I had a 95 300tdi and sold it with 225,000 on the clock, it is still going strong to this day.

The steering box can leak from the drop arm bearings, they are exchange units so bear that in mind.

Pull out the front carpet mats and then feel behind the soundproofing mat behind the pedals near the bottom, a common rust area but not too bad to fix.

Put the steering on full lock and look at the swivels, a little pitting is ok as long a no oil is leaking out, small oil leaks from here can be fixed by replacing the oil with special grease so not a deal breaker.

Long post but hope it helps rather than put you off :D
