Anyone worked at Firth Browns?

Recommended Posts

Yes Meltman, I got my bearings wrong as to the photo as you say the Smelting Co was further back on Princess Street actually forming part of Royds Lane and Royd Mill Street. When my brother worked there SSCo were taken over by an American company, Engelhard Industries who's UK base was in Birmingham. They transferred most of their work but not the people to the midlands my brother and lots more no longer having a job. I think THESSCO was a reincarnation of the old outfit and good for them.

A lot of the little roads were taken and enclosed withing the expanding works. Atlas House and it's car park were built on Blackamore street. The first few meters still exist I guess outside the Pewter Co. door. Blackamore street went from Princess street to Attercliffe road and had rows of houses either side. When they was building Atlas House a concrete mixer lorry fell into one of the cellers. We could see an old cobbled road (Royds Lane??) within the Smelting Co. works from the back windows of Atlas House.

Yes, Lovell Street and Fersfield Street (which ran under the railway bridge) were two others.

Hi Meltman, stpetre and all,

Yes , I do now believe that Royds Mill Street was enclosed within Thessco works sometime after I left in 1964. I noticed a few years ago that Windsor Street had been walled off at Princess Street and the Attercliffe Road end, shown here again for convenience, had been gated across some distance before the works entrance far left of pic. and after the pic. was taken....

I worked as a clerk in the export department office for only a few months between 1963/4 and decided to return to Firth Browns. I wasn't sure of the factory layout as wasn't allowed to wander around, unlike at firth Browns. This no doubt was due to the nature of the business i.e. precious metals.

I hope that the chat on this subject is available and interesting to future researchers :)

It was Windsor st,training shop on 1 side and hard metals on the other.FBT had shops all over Carlisle and Saville st.

That last picture looks like behind the metal saw or hard metal shop.

Well , i did'nt know you had associations with Carlisle Street East , Dave ?

It was a regular training area for me when i won the Sheffield Star Walk in 1964.

A small world eh , don't you think.

Take care and hope you and your wife are in good health.

Regards your pal, Mick.:)

Below is a link to another thread on this Forum.

On the first post is a link to a 20 min 1948 film. The relevance to Firth Browns are two clips of ,sadly, less than 10 seconds each, filmed probably from the upper deck of a tram. It's the only movie footage I've ever seen in this particular location. It shows Saville Street East, from where the big clock was on the left at 33 gate, towards Brightside Lane. Watch out for the Head Office buildings just after the clock on the left, some of which still exist as Premier Buildings, and the hotel, now long gone, on the right at the end of Norroy Street. Also the buildings further along on the right, which still exist.

Hi Brian,

Further to your post 557 and my response post 558, here are some more pics I took in 1990 of the gates prior to the ones you mentioned. The gates follow on from each other and I don't know why the numbers aren't sequential. Don't recall any gates on the opposite side of Savile Street East in that location. The gates for those buildings are, I believe, on Greystock Street, the opposite side of the buildings .....

Here's what remains of them now. Only 36 gate still exists. Pics dated 2005....

The war memorial has been removed but the mounting plinth is shown on here, still remaining, on the front wall at the nearest end of the building. The same memorial plinth on the first pic gives an indicator as to where the buildings to the left of it were demolished, including the canopy section.

Hi Brian, usual moans and groans but I'm still plodding on thanks :)

Attached to the nearest building on your pic were workshops stretching back to the railway line which was a few hundred yards back on the left between the buildings on your pic. They were higher than the buildings on your pic and I think the top halves were made of corrogated metal with about eight ridges in total stretching back to the rail track. On the Saville Street side it was attached to 37 gate at the far building on your pic, which now has the spider on the exposed wall where the gate was attached.

Peter, when you talked about how Jessops got its name at the

Hi Brian and everyone,

Here are two photographs of my colleagues in Progress and Planning Dept office which was in the yard through 36 gate on Savile Street East. The old test house shop can be seen through the back window in the second pic. I used to handle all those files on the shelves and my desk was at the back out of shot to the right of the second pic. The offices were obviously much bigger than the small area shown on the photos. The pics. were taken a year or two before I started there in Feb 1959 aged 15. I have most of the names and copies of some signatures.

A car park for President Buildings in now on the site of the office block.

I don't suppose my old colleagues from almost sixty years ago will be recognised by anyone, but I clearly remember them all.

Bless 'em. Those were the days :).

Hi Brian,

I'm assuming that you are refering to the first 'photo.

The only two of the one's you mention that I can put names to are.....

Front row second from left...

Roy Harper who was a progress clerk and dealt with work put out to outside contractors.

He was a part time football referee and sadly collapsed and died on the pitch.

Front row fifth from left...

Ron Skinner, my old pal who died three years ago and who you may recognise you have seen on our scooter photos on past posts. He was a progress clerk for forgings at testing stage in 7 bay I recall he told me.

When I left Firth Browns from the Forging Sales Dept in 1963 my old colleagues in Progress and Planning bought me a leaving present. I recall walking across the railway line to their 'new' offices at the time to thank them. Ron Stacey, front row far right, who was Chief Planner had by that time become Head of Heavy Engineering over there. When he heard I wanted to return to FBs he offered me the job at Central Warehouse. Who you know in those days eh :)

Peter.
