Sleep apnoea , cpap machine and travel

Recommended Posts

Im due to travel to spain and have a c pap machine.

Do i have to include it in my baggage allowance?

Can i have it as hand luggage?

Can it be taken on board as free allowance as medical equipment?

Would you just leave it at home if only away for 7 days?

had sleep apnoea, was waking up 80 times per hour! I could not get used to the c-pap machines. so I had an op to drill holes in the septum in my nose. painless op. couple of weeks later was breathing through my nose properly. 15 years later still feeling great with minimum snoring. think about having it done.

When I was able to travel we sailed from Southampton several times because my oxygen management company Air Products were wonderful and set everything up from their branch down there.

All we did was to inform the local branch of the details and they did the rest, P&O were very helpful and efficient too.

This is different to your situation but I would seek advice from the hospital or your G.P. it may well be that yours is a question asked regularly and a simple solution can be easily arrived at.

Hi Muckymurphy,

Can you remember what this op was called, and is it available on the NHS or did you have to gp private, in which case how much did it cost if you don't mind me asking?

I have sleep apnoea and a cpap machine, but I really don't get on with it, in fact it keeps me awake, which rather defeats the object. I've been looking for a viable alternative, but doctor said there wasn't one, so any information would be helpful..

I used to wake up with a mini hurricane blowing on my face when the mask became dislodged, wrecking my sleep.

I got my op on the NHS at Doncaster hospital.

I had to fight for it though. a specialist said I would have to inform DVLA and surrender my licence which was a definite no-no for me as I drive in the course of my work. so I asked for a second opinion and went to leeds for this and that's when the op was suggested. I caught a glimpse of the letter sent ahead of my visit and it described me as a 'problem' patient. presumably because they realised they would have to spend some of my tax and NI payments on an op for me instead of fobbing me off with the usual ineffective 'solutions' they dish out these days. my only op in 56 years. hardly asking for much is it.

go back to the specialist and ask for an op. if refused, ask for a second opinion.

be prepared for a fight.

you (and others) are welcome to pm me (so I don't miss your post) if I can be of further help.

good luck.

I think that it's wise to point out at this moment that the operation may only be suitable for certain patients with certain issues.

I was put forwards for a similar operation when I was a teenager to have the bones through my nose widened to enable me to breathe lying down but it was then discovered that the bones weren't wide enough to have larger holes through them without their whole structure collapsing, and therefore I wasn't suitable.

Thanks for the info mucky, I thought there must be something, the cpap machine looks like it belongs in the dark ages and should have gone out with the iron lung.

Medusa, I also take your point as well, and will proceed with caution.

Thanks.
