Drug prohibition costs lives

Recommended Posts

Here's another reason why prohibition is stupid and counterproductive.

MDMA, one of the safest recreational drugs there is, has been cracked down on worldwide and production has slowed. But as anyone with half a brain could have predicted, this has not effected demand at all, and unscrupulous drug manufacturers have instead turned to using far more dangerous ingredients to make a similar drug.

The past week has seen a number of drug disasters in the UK, one of which is the unexpected deaths of three men, two from Ipswich and one from Telford. They all appear to have taken a drug called PMA (phenoxymethylamphetamine). We presume that they did not know this was what was in the pills bearing the Superman logo that they bought – it seems likely they thought it was ecstasy (MDMA). PMA and its close relative PMMA are not new drugs...They have in the past few years re-emerged as a toxic surrogate for ecstasy. In this period they have been responsible for more than 100 deaths in the UK, and now the majority of deaths that the media report as being due to “ecstasy” are, in fact, caused by PMA and PMMA....Their re-emergence is directly due to the international community’s attempts, via UN conventions, to stop the use of MDMA by prohibiting its production and sale.

And just in case you think this David Nutt guy is some kind of nut here's the first paragraph from his wikipedia entry to give you an idea of his qualifications:

David John Nutt (born 16 April 1951) DM FRCP FRCPsych FMedSci is a British psychiatrist and neuropsychopharmacologist specialising in the research of drugs that affect the brain and conditions such as addiction, anxiety and sleep.[3] He was until 2009 a professor at the University of Bristol heading their Psychopharmacology Unit.[4] Since then he has been the Edmond J Safra chair in Neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College, London.[5] Nutt was a member of the Committee on Safety of Medicines, and was President of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology.

And I hope you don't ever drink any alcohol or smoke tobacco around children, both far more dangerous drugs than MDMA.

And by the way, I've done MDMA about 3 times in my entire life, if you think that makes me a hopeless drug addict compared to the average person who drinks alcohol several times a week, then you're an idiot.

Anyway, this is all besides the point even if MDMA was equally or more dangerous than alcohol I would still advocate regulation over prohibition as the best method of preventing harm resulting from its use, and even if I was a hopeless druggy that wouldn't make me any less right about this.

I hope you're happy with the amount of your tax that goes towards fighting the never ending war on drugs and criminalising recreational users?

So, is there a reason why MDMA is actually banned?
