My son is about 3 and 1/2 months old. Over the last week or so he has been trying to roll over. In his cot he will often roll from his back to side and sleep like that.

I have read that until 6 months old you should put the baby back onto their back if they roll to their side or tummy.

But this morning at about 10 to 5 I find that, not only is he laid on his side, he is laid with his head towards the bottom of the cot! He was on a diagonal so I couldn't just turn him onto his back without also rotating him. I decided to leave him, by half 5 he had rotated further and this time his head and torso were straight but his legs were on the other side of the cot. He seemed to stop there until waking for a feed, he might have carried on rotating round the bed if it hadn't been for the feed!

I'm not sure what to do. Should I be worried and risk waking him up to turn him around or leave him to his own devices?

My baby did this when we moved her into her cotbed at around 4 and a half months, At first i kept moving her back from her side or tummy onto her back again but as soon as she stirred she moved again so I gave up!!.
She now sleeps flat on her tummy with her face to side, no matter how I lay her down this is where she likes to be. I also put her foot to bottom but she wakes up head to top or even sideways on, I have def got a fidgity baby. ( this is all done while wearing a sleeping bag too!)
I have just come to the conclusion that its better to leave her where she is comfy, instead of risking waking her up. She can lift her head up unaided now so I'm less worried.

My baby also wears a sleeping bag, wonder if it connected?

We recently moved him into his cot from his crib. His arms had been sticking out of the sides for a while but we thought he'd be OK in it for a while longer. But when he started turning to his side he managed to get is leg stuck in between the bars and woke up crying.

We then decided to move him into to the cot to give him more room. I think we have given him more room to turn around!

I think I might not worry too much about the baby gymnastics, as you say even if you turn them onto their back they'll turn onto their side or tummy again.

My little girl was exactly the same, preferring to sleep on her front, bottom in the air. I used to move her but she just got back in the same position. So I put her in a sleeping bag to ensure she was always warm, as she would kick off the blankets and left her as she is.

Sounds to me as though you are doing the right thing!

Think I will be buying some more sleep bags, two doesn't seem to be enough. (Always seem to be one needing washing and the other one washed but not dry yet). Will probably end up buying 6-12 months ones as I don't think he'll be in the 0-6 months size ones for much longer as he's quite a tall baby.

Funny thing is last night he didn't rotate at all, either that or he rotated all the way round back to where he started.

My son was the same, still is now actually!

I think they are just fidgety as he didn't have a sleeping bag and got one as I found him with his head under the blanket, upside down in his cot!

fabgirl - thanks for the heads up, there so expensive sleep bags, cheapest place I could find was Primark, but so many places I've seen them at £20+. And if you need 2 or 3 it soon adds up.

lauren84 - Up until recently I have been using a combination of blankets/sheets or sleep bags, depending on what was clean. But I'm planning on just using sleep bags now in case he does was yours did and ends up with his head under the covers or some how tangled up
