Runningman   148 #1 Posted January 13, 2017 Could I take a small sample of material anywhere for testing. I suspect it could contain asbestos
 Share this content via...
rudds1 Â Â 102 #2 Posted January 14, 2017 What about contacting a company that removes asbestos and ask them for their advice as if the object your on about does contain asbestos you don't want to risk releasing the fibres when you break off a piece to be checked. alan p   15 #3 Posted January 14, 2017 Hello Runningman, I don't know where you would take a sample to these days but if you do take a piece just make sure it is totally wet through just to make sure there is no chance of the fibers becoming airborne. alan p. Gamston   10 #4 Posted January 14, 2017 You can buy an asbestos testing kit. A google search should help.  This link may also help in identifying asbestos ....  https://www.asbestosremovalists.co.uk/what-does-asbestos-look-like/
 Share this content via...

Margarita Ma   10 #7 Posted January 14, 2017 Agree with the above my other half died of Mesothelioma a cancer only caused by asbestos. The link above takes you to a company that provides a testing service. No matter what it costs it should not cost your life. mickey finn   12 #8 Posted January 14, 2017 (edited) Wear a single use mask and gloves, give the area to be sampled a good wet through then carefully cut a piece off and put it in a zip lock bag or tupperware type container, where you would take it is another matter, a few mates have worked in asbestos removal before and have said the only reason they insist on taking their own samples as opposed to the customer taking them in themselves is about an extra £150 added onto the bill.  ---------- Post added 14-01-2017 at 17:21 ----------  Agree with the above my other half died of Mesothelioma a cancer only caused by asbestos. No matter what it costs it should not cost your life.  This must have been pleural mesothelioma, it is a horrible disease and the main reason why I personally would get the experts in, despite the fact you can take your own samples I wouldnt want to put myself at risk of something so horrible, I'd rather cough up the money and let them take the risks. carosio   186 #9 Posted January 14, 2017 In a city that's had heavy industry, many of us will have inhaled some asbestos dust from working in factories, car and lorry brake linings, ironing boards etc, although I know that most of these things are now made from asbestos-free materials. dangerousedd   10 #10 Posted January 14, 2017 it has a long latency period you might inhale a fibre and not have any problems for 20 years. there's no cure atm, my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer and died 5 weeks later. the coroner rung us up after he died saying they had to do a pm since he had mesothelioma.  probably not a good idea to mess with it if it is asbestos. davyboy   19 #11 Posted January 14, 2017 If you have had artex ceilings before 1984 the artex will have asbestos in it. I had a professional to sample and analyse mine 10 years ago £250.
 Share this content via...
