How awful...though I do agree with this bit
''Claims to be Britain's greenest city, and to have quadruple the number of trees as people. An obvious fabrication: there are fewer than one million trees on the British Isles.....Residents seem to suffer from a misguided sense of civic pride (e.g. "we have lots of trees!"), and would no doubt claim their city far superior to the many surrounding it.
When I first came to Sheffield 8 years ago the amount of locals who said to me ' I bet you don't see this many trees in Middlesbrough??' was quite alarming!!

The number of people who have told me in the last 4 years that "Sheffield is the 4th biggest in England" I surprised that wasn't in there.

There must be more than 1 million trees in the UK.
They plant about 250,000 trees a year in London alone acording to the Guardian.
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/other...306430,00.html
"There are 8m trees in the capital and while its councils know how many they are planting, no one has kept a record of those being lost. "

It's easy to forget just how big Sheffield is actually.
I drove from High Green to Totley this morning which took an hour in average traffic. A hour to cross a city does not make a small city.
Sheffield's city centre is quite small compared to Leeds, Liverpool etc but the suburbs are quite sprawling.
I always thought Sheffield was 3rd largest in area but 4th largest in population.
Who cares anyhow?

An hour to cross a not very big city makes a not very big city with severe traffic dysfunction.
Quite an amusing page. It does however highlight the comparative lack of 'unique' features in Sheffield that make a city.

I think this is due to our council who haven't the knowledge nor the enthusiasm to correct this. I'm sure if we do try something new, the anti-brigade will be out in force to keep Sheffield how it is.
