Hi everyone,

Just booked my bora in for a compression test on Friday.

The VW specialist recons 1.6 16v petrol yr 2k are renowned for this problem.

He said if it is that most likely going to have to rebuild the engine.

Cost between 750 - 1000!!!!!!!!!!

Does that sound about right. Changing all bits inside engine etc???

Thanks,

Engine rebuild for mine is between 2500-3000, so that does sound about right.

I feel for you. It's not a great situation. You'll still take a loss by selling it with low compression.

May I ask what symptoms it has that caused you to book the compression test?

I'm asking this as I was initially told I needed a rebuild, only to discover the engine was fine; just needed a new starter motor, plugs & leads. Now good as new.

Low compression can be a problem on this engine. Get a cylinder leakage test done it could just be the valves in the head, which would be a cheaper repair.

Ive booked a compression tets for this friday at a VW specialist. My plan

a) if he says 1000 then i sell the car as it is.
b) if its 500 shop around for a cheaper deal.
c) it may turn out to be a loose screw ( i wish)

Thanks for all yoru comments

Good stuff, there are some good independents around who know the cars, have the proper diagnostic gear but don't charge dealer prices.

Did they do a cylinder leakage test?. It could just want valves in head sorting.

to be honest i believe they just did a compression test and that was enough. It was a VW specialist. Ive rung round a few places andthey all want to replace every part inside while its open etc

I just havent got 800.

Thanks,

Would you pay for a leakage test as well??

Thanks,
