I have heard that a dog was killed by another dog earlier today, in Firth Park

Apparently, a Yorkie was attacked by a bull mastiff type and died as a result. The Police were in the Park, trying to find the attack dog.

If you usually walk your dog in the Park, please be very careful.

Oh not again, this is beginning to be a regular thing!

Poor little dog to end its life that way is so sad, shame on the owner of the Bull Mastiff to let that happen

It really makes me wonder if the police can get their priorities right, looking at the time this thread was posted, if the dog attack happened earlier today it did'nt take the police long to take action and get to the park looking for the attack dog. But yet the Rotherham Advertiser ran a story last Friday about a young child that had been held by someone who had put a knife to the childs throat, when the police were called on a 999 shout it took them 8 hours to respond to the call, reason given, no one available to cover the call.

I can't comment on the Rotherham Advertiser story, but there have been other dog attacks in Firth Park where the police didn't respond nearly as quickly. I can only think that it depends on how busy they are when the call comes in.

I'm afraid I have no further description of the dog, but I've kept mine away from the Park today, just in case.

It may be the community support officers who were in the park looking. They can identify a suspect but would not be used in a case as serious as a knife attack as they don't have the proper training.

No, it wasn't little Rosie, but it was a Yorkie friend of hers. I don't know how the poor woman must be feeling, seeing that happen in front of her.

I bumped into another friend in the park, who said her dog had been attacked on Sunday and it sounds like the same dog.

She described it as a very large bull breed - some sort of cross, she thought - all white, with a black patch on one eye (or somewhere on its head). It was ambling towards her and her dog in a friendly fashion, then suddenly leapt on her dog and flattened it. Luckily, it was wearing a collar and my friend somehow managed to haul it off her dog.

In the meantime, the owner continued to walk slowly towards them! She was screaming and shouting at him to get his dog, but he said he couldn't see where it was! When he got up close, he stank of booze and looked the worse for wear.

He went off with the dog, but didn't appear to have a lead for it.

She said that a similar sounding dog had also had a go at a little girl, the mum got in front of her and screamed at the idiots with it (an older man and 2 youths) to get hold of it. They did, but said it was just a "family pet".

I despair of some dog owners, I really do.

A large dog savaged a pensioner's dog to death, in a public park full of kids and not far from a nursery, and you're complaining because the police turned up??

i am the owner of the dog that was attacked sunday, i also have two granchildren both under 5 who love to come with me and the dog on the park, i dread to think what would have happened if i had both of them with me as well!! that animal is nothing more than a killing machine and it had demonstrated it doesnt care what it will rip to bits having attacked mine, killed another and launched at an 8 year old child. it needs destroying fast.

i was absolutely mortified by what i witnessed so i cant begin to imagine what that poor poor lady must have and still be going through... i cant stop thinking about her

i believe my dog was fortunate because she is a large dog anyway, cross alstatian akita breed and the fact that she has a lot of loose skin round her neck is what kept her alive and gave me enough time to think and act. having said that even she couldnt defend herself against it, she disappeared underneath it and couldnt get up, it would have mauled her to death had i not used 2 hands and pulled it off!

the dog has still not been caught so anyone using the park and i do mean anyone, pet owners, parents with kids please be on the look out, this dog is dangerous and so are its owners!! at the time it was with a broad bloke, in his 40s mousey brown short hair, white stunk of booze. if anyone sees it please call the police. it is a bitch, all white, with a black patch on its eye, or round its head, but covering its eye, massive, bigger than any dog i have seen, its back is broader than a blokes shoulders it was bigger than an american pit, i think it was a bull mastiff cross bred. on an adult i would say it stands just above knee height.

and yes i agree, it is the owners who make the animal like that and if i had my way i would destroy them 2!! i know a few owners of red nose pits and they are lovely dogs, all they want to do is play. again thats because they have responsible owners who know that with owning a dog comes responsibility and they are socialised with other dogs on a regular basis...so yes in reply it is the owners that make them like that!!

Your description of the dog is massively exaggerated. Ive seen the dog you mean and its no where near the size you say. It had a go at my friends German Shepherds but didnt fancy taking on two 7 stone dogs on at once. The owner (your description is spot on) then had a go at my mate for having two big dogs in a public place

Yesterday we responded to a report that a dog had attacked other dogs in Firth park , Sheffield. It was established that a dog had attacked two other dogs, killing a Yorkshire Terrier and a seriously injuring a Labrador.
We are making a number of enquiries to trace a white male aged late 30's early 40's , dark hair wearing grey tracksuit bottoms and a dark coloured top. The dog is described as a Bull Mastiff type dog which is white with brown markings.
We have increased patrol activity today in this area and ask that if you have information about this incident to call us on 101 and quote incident number 329 of 23rd July or Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

It's very upsetting incident for the victims and we are working hard to try and trace this man and dog.
