We saw him in Pirates Of Penzance at The Lyceum, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London Palladium. Seems to have been in loads of things. Had a very "nice" face, if you know what I mean.

RIP

He was also a very good serious actor and appeared on stage in many Shakespear plays.

I was listening to the radio on Sunday and Barbara Windsor who was hosting the Elaine Paige show on Radio 2 sent out special wishes to him, saying I just want to send love and good wishes out to my dear friend Victor Spinetti who has been really poorly recently.

RIP Victor,

Quite saddened by the lack of coverage over Spinetti's passing. He played major roles (pun possibly intended in part) in all three Beatles films he appeared in.

His role as television director in A Hard Day's Night was wonderful. His Sergeant Major in Magical Mystery Tour, hilarious.

That all four Beatles took to him - they were a very tight-knit group and not many outsiders got inside their ring - says an awful lot about him.

Great actor, nice guy and a legend in the history of the Beatles on film.

RIP.

Also I heard him talking about his life on R4 Extra not so long ago, it was very amusing. I guess that might be out "there" somewhere.

Edit. Just looked at the CD on Amazon and I think it's the same thing I listened to. It is very good.

Victor Spinetti is, apart from Peter Cook (London, 1986), probably the most well known person in show business/entertainment, I've ever sat in the same room with.

my mother was brought up in the same South Wales village as him, near Ebbw Vale. He was several years older than she. The two families lived on the same street.

I was more familiar with Victor's younger brother, Mario, than Victor. Mario had a cafe in the village, up until at least the late 1970s. As kids, we used to go there for ice cream. Mario was always kind to us. We messed around with Mario's kids too, although I forget their names.

can't forget Mario's name though. It was on the sign on the cafe.

once, Victor came back to the village for a visit, and came round to my grandparents house when we were there and he was introduced to my mother's kids, us. He seemed a very glamourous figure.

sometimes down the years, Victor would appear in some play or entertainment in Sheffield, usually the Crucible, and when that happened, my mom would ask Victor for a pass and go and chat to him in the dressing room after the performance.

she said that although he was still the same old Victor she knew as a kid, he had become a bit full of himself. He was always name dropping all the Hollywood and other stars he knew. It's just the nature of showbusiness, I suppose. I know she shed a tear for her old pal Victor last week.

she said it was always obvious, even when they were kids, that Victor was gay, and everybody in the village, even in that quite conservative (but Labour voting) setting, accepted it.

RIP Victor. He was a very talented man.

Thanks for sharing callippo.

Here's a article from your mother's local paper:

I've just downloaded the audio of his "A Very Private Diary" show.

it was a big thing, for a little place like that, what Victor did.

although Victor was never a really big star himself, like Tom Jones of same era, became (from Pontypridd, 15 miles away) it was a still a big thing.
