hi my 2 year old son has very bad eczema, hes had it since he was very small, small patches on his face, behind his ears, on his body, his bottom, all over his arms and legs its really horrible it looks like hes been burnt, we have tried loads of different creams such as moisturisers, emolients oilatum bath oil etc and hydrocotizone and a betnovate steroid creams, these steroid creams have made his skin very patchy and thin, he also makes the affected areas sore and bleed he scratches it that much even when hes asleep. i put this moisturising cream on quite often throughout the day and before bed but within minutes it looks dry again, i know theres no quick cure as such but i just cant seem to get on top of it no matter how much i try, he is constantly itching and saying it hurts, iv lost count of the amount of times i taken him to the doctors to be given different creams and to be told to come back in a few weeks but nothing seems to work, the streoid creams do help take down the redness but when its very sore and been bleeding he wont let me put it on him because it hurts and i dont want to keep putting the steroid creams on him because skin looks very thin and patchy he really does like hes been burnt, if anyone has any suggestion whatso ever as to how i can help him more then please let me know :-)

Does he have a lot of Dairy Products in his Diet???, just asking because my Mum suffers badly with Eczema, and noticed a vast improvement when she cut most of it out of her diet.
Hope you find something that helps the poor little love

A change of laundry powder helped my eczema. Took a while to find a brand that worked, but may be worth considering.
At the more extreme end of the scale, moving to a dryer climate has made it totally disappear.

hi he doesnt really have much dairy apart from milk when he goes to bed and hes really picky at his food so he doesnt eat much, iv tried loads of different washing powders and found fairy to be better for him though it doesnt help all that much, iv noticed it gets better when he visits his nannan for a few days in wales, although moving to wales is not an option . x

i totally understand where you are coming from!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!
go to the doctors and ask for a dermatologist referral. do not take no for an answer.
they will take blood tests and check for allergies such as pet, house dust mites etc.
also ask them for skinnies.
these are cotton tight fitting long johns. you apply the moisturier such as lipobase or ungentum m thickly then put the skinnies on over the top. this keeps the skin moist thoughtout the night.
in the mean time try a mild non bio wash powder (cheap one) followed by a decent sensitive conditioner such as fairy or comfort.
also ask doctor for piriton... it can help reduce the inflamation if its related to allergies and definatly help the little one to reduce itching.
oilatum i found is useless. maybe something like dermol 600 or another antibacterial bath emoiliant.
my 3 yr old is very allergic and suffers from a wide range of medical conditions one of which is eczema and also when this gets very raw his allergy to house dust mite acts as a catalyst. its so bad his skin comes off and is really uncomfortable and upsetting for him and me to see him like that too.
i hope you find this information helpful xxxx
please let us know how he is xx

thankyou!!! this was very helpful, he has ungentum at the minute, feel like im going through bucket loads! and i agree the olatum is rubbish, i think i will take him back and ask for the refferal, one doctor mentioned that a while ago because she saw it at its worst and she wasnt happy with how it was, but then somehow it never happened, i also think he could be allergic to a few things though i cant pin point what they are, this test would be very helpful, he was up last night with it, scratching it so hard it bled again, i sit and rub it gently for him until he falls asleep then hes back up again, it must be so horrible for him, thankyou, will let you know what the doctor says :-)

diprobase is a water based cream so i wouldnt recomend it at all.
every child is different but eumovate burnt my boy. he has ungentum m as a moisturiser, hydramol for a wash, betnovate RD as a 1st resort to a flare up, elocon as a steriod cream, dermol 600 for the bath and octenisan as a soap.
i still have those sleepness nights of rubbing skin.
maybe make a claim for dla when you find out his condition and catalysts???
theres lots of solutions which come in handy such as 'gloves in a bottle'.
look it up!!! my son has this applied if he goes swimming....he loves swimming!!!
can be expensive. hospital catalouge sells it for £99.99 for 4.8ltrs. you can find it on ebay also!!!
inbox me if you need any further advice sweety.

apply the cream as often as you can!! it acts as a cleanser too.
i apply it every 2 hours ... it does make a difference.
especially used with the skinnies.

yes it has to be prescribed.
catalyst means to speed up a reaction.
i know what you mean about thinning of the skin. the cream i found which works for my boy is trimovate but that thins the skin. they prescribe it me every now and again and the same with elocon as he is still a young child.
my heart really goes out to you hunnie. its so hard. and heartbreaking.
do you use the ungentum m as a soap aswel????

no i didnt know you could, iv just been to the doctors a million times and they just say here try this, or here try that, and i go back again and again, i coat him heand to toe in ungentum he even tells me 'cream mummy' bless him, im going to try and get back to the doctors tommorow and ask for this referal and mention these creams and such that you said, and see what they say, i know he really needs the hydrocortizone but i hate putting it on him, he cries when i get that out and puts up a fight because hes doesnt want it on. ill see what the doctor says, maybe she will realise this time how its affecting him x

My 2 kids suffer real bad with eczema too, we have all the steroid creams and emollients, however i just wondered if you give your son an allergy medicine in the morning and before bed to help with the scratching, sorry if this is obvious i just cant remember seeing you mention one? Maybe it would calm the scratching down.
