Hi there, wondering if anybody could give me any advice. My son is 3 and a half and has a severve form of autism. It is not possible to take him out without him being strapped into a pushchair, the problem being is that he is now too large for a regular pushchair and he has learnt how to tip the pram over resulting in injury. I have been online and seen that our best bet would be a special needs pushchair however these are soooo expensive does anybody know if they are available to hire from anywhere longterm?? many thanks in advance xx

*mod hat off, advice head on*

Contact Shopmobility Sheffield, in the short-term, as they have a paediatric chair, but it may be a shade too large for a 3 year old.

Get your doctor or social worker to refer you to the Wheelchair and Appliance Centre at the northern general, and you ought to be able to be provided with a McLaren maxi buggy or something similar, suitable for your son.

Hi. We ended up with a special buggy by accident as I was looking to buy one too. I was advised by a social work student to talk to our GP who then referred our request to social services and we received a brand new buggy from Clark and Partners on long term loan. There were no extras such as raincover or shopping basket but you can buy these on ebay for a fraction of the price.

If you need advice as the parent of a child with a disability the Sheffield Parent Carer Forum (just google it) is worth joining. We have a son who is 7 and a half and have received lots of information and support from them. Good luck with getting the pushchair. x

thank you so much for your kind advice, i contacted the wheelchair and appliance centre at the northen and was told my sons g.p could refer him but it was unlikely to be successfull as they dont class autism as a medical condition. Ive contacted sign, who were really helpfull and are on the case for me. Hes also too little for the paediatric chair.......however its worth baring in mind for the future, thank you once again for your quick, kind and helpful replies xx

yes you can get a special needs pushchair for autism, I know several people who have them! Do you have a consultant for your son, as they can refer and do it quicker than GP's. Keep pushing as its something they should be taking into account. If you have a health visitor or occupational therapist its also worth speaking to them. Good luck.
