hi all,
just wondering if any of you drive to Leeds everyday from the west side of Sheffield? (woodseats, millhouses, abbeydale etc).
I'm thinking of applying for a job, but the position is in an industrial estate just outside of leeds city centre, so wouldn't be accessible by train.
how long would it take, and what would be the best route etc?
thanks in advance.

which side of Leeds?
What time do you start and finish?

If you start before 8am and it's this side of Leeds then it's not great but do-able. If you start at 9am, it's awful. If the industrial estate is the wrong side of Leeds then you must be mad!

Starting at 8am you will be ahead of most of the traffic getting out of Sheffield but still hit the traffic entering Leeds. Start at 9am you hit traffic everywhere!

Must admit it is a about 12 months since I did the daily commute from Sheffield to Leeds (for about 20 years) and I live nearer the M1 than yourself. I would suggest you do the M1 route rather than A61.

As already stated, trying to get there for 9am is a nightmare and leaving at 5.30pm also. So I tended to arrive early and either leave early (if allowed) or leave a bit later. I know, makes your day longer but I found it more relaxing to be moving (sometimes slowly in traffic) as opposed to continual stop / start – gives you time to listen to the radio.

I did find that in the mornings the traffic volumes tended to be in waves. There would be a lot of traffic but 5 minutes earlier or later and it was less busy.

Also contrary to what you may be told, there is a definite easing of traffic when the kids are on holiday.

Good luck in your new adventure and use the travelling time to relax (I know it is difficult) and chill out.

I do this journey regularly from that neck of the woods but work shifts so my experience will be slightly different to yours if you will work office hours. I get on the Motorway at Meadowhall, its usually easy enough to get onto the M1 that way, roughly the same distance as if you were to go on the A61 but quicker in terms of time, and its shorter than going via parkway. Can't imagine the traffic being pleasant between 8 and 9am though. I would also advise, unless you are mega rich, to get an economical car as you can reasonably expect to pay £8-11 per day on fuel alone. Despite what people say, Leeds is easy enough to negotiate and once you know where you are going the roads and ways out of the city are actually pretty sensible.

Sorry, cant really help on getting to the M1. However, although I am very near the Parkway I would normally get on the M1 at Meadowhall.
