Wouldn't surprise me if they were fakes. I made the mistake of buying some AKG headphones from eBay that came from a Chinese seller and they were rubbish even though all the reviews said they were extremely good etc, so who knows.

It depends whether you are lucky or not. Most fakes are simply poor quality headphones with another manufacturer's logo printed on them, but a small number are excess inventory from the 'genuine' production line, made to the same high quality, but without the logos etc.

Personally, I'd avoid buying headphones from random Chinese eBay sellers.

Me too, if something seems too good to be true, it usually is.

I'd suggest that you have to be wary about buying off Amazon's marketplace sellers, they offer big discounts on earphones but it's questionable if they're selling the originals.

Too many fakes around, the ONLY way to know your getting the real thing is to go instore or buy online for the retailers listed on http://beatsbydre.com/support/wheretobuy.aspx buy new from anywhere else and the chances are they are fake.

Sound magic in ear buds get good reviews on What Hi-fi, I have a pair of Sennheiser CX 300 which have just packed in, had them about 3 years, my son has had a couple of pairs, one set was replaced under warranty, (2 years with senns'). I would note though as with these 'in ear' type, although there is a mesh cover, on the part that inserts into your ear, after a while, one or both ear buds will sound 'dull' or just quiet, this due to ear wax that permiates though the mesh, and you have to dismantle the things, it's not easy due to the size and of course they're a sealed unit, I ended up using a thin layer of blu-tack to hold them together. There's a few threads on the web about cleaning CX 300's
Now as I have said both mine and my sons have failed, would we buy another pair?
Probably yes. but I wouldn't spend a lot on in ear buds, the Sennheisers were about £20, they are genuine by the way, I think they are about £40 now, so I wouldn't spend that much now, as opposed, to proper 'headphones', I have a few pairs, Sennheisers that are a good few years old, and a pair of Beyerdynamic DT330, that are at least 25 years old, they still sound great.
I'd like a pair of Beyer DT 770's, expensive but real pro quality, will blow any 'beats' away, they may not sound as immediately impressive, i.e don't swamp everything in bass but tonally very accurate,
Regards acman

Just like to add as well, build quality on Beyers is great, a lot of the parts are user replaceable, and like I say mine are 25 years old and still in use, used them last night in fact, and these at the time were the more budget end of beyers range, can't see a pair of beats lasting anything like that, unless you're really careful, A radio presenter I know, uses Beyers (DT770),when presenting, had them years, obviously had some serious use in that time. still going strong.

My Sennheiser CX 300s are still going strong after a good few years, but then I only wear them in the gym so they probably get a lot less use than many.

I can't see much point in buying fakes for the same money as you could spend on genuine versions of a less prominent (but still OK) brand. I only managed to afford the Sennheisers because Richer Sounds were selling off the pink ones because nobody wanted them. The black, silver, white etc ones were all £30 but the pink ones were £8 and since I was only wanting them to wear in the gym I bit the bullet and bought pink ones.
