I am getting Sky installed in my new house the day we move in next week. However, the phone line can't be activated until mid-June but will the broadband work before then? Or does it require an active phone line to work?

and whats worse, is they generally can't process a broadband order until the phone line is active/installed, then once that's done, they can process the broadband, and it could take up to another 5 days after the line activation.

If it's LLU it all comes out of the same CP equipment in the exchange, if it's SMPF dial tone is provided from one set of equipment and broadband out of another but it is possible to have the broadband working down a line without the dialtone being conected.

An opportune time to share a work colleague's sky nightmare. For a very long time they had both internet and TV bundles - then they decided they would switch the phone to Sky - what happened? They were treated as a new customer and were told it could be 3 weeks before resuming broadband as taking out the phone package meant they were being treated as a new customer! Eventually sorted but now cannot get decent connection to router in different part of house (wirelessly).

Thats probably because sky would have been using and relying on BT tp provide the service, and had to send an order to BT to get it activated, so hadto wait for them first!

No broadband before the phone line unfortunately, and as above; sometimes they won't be able to order the broadband until after the phone line goes active. If the phone line activation's a way off though, i'd get in touch and make sure they're placing a simultaneous order so that the phone and broadband go on at the same time.
