Thats a good point bogwoppit. i commented on my review of ford bottom that i wouldnt advise it for reactive dogs at peak times.
the first time bella saw picnickers, she cowered to the floor growling at them. sigh!

Haha, I can only wish for that
One of my most cringe worthy dog moments was when Luna stole an entire picnic in Millhouses park :roll eyes:
The family were (understandably) not impressed. The problem with Luna is she has the hunger of a labrador but the speed, agility and eyesight of a lurcher, so anywhere where picnics are likely is now off for us

I understand what you are saying about birdlife/animals, and if your dog isn't the best with other dogs but I have quite strong views with this:
1- Your dogs should have a good recall. If you spot an hazard, or if your dog starts chasing for something you don't want it to get then a good recall should bring him/her back. I have spent a lot of time with my dog doing this and think its what all owners should do.
2- if your dog is nasty with others then simple - your dog should be on a lead. I don't know any walk where your not going to bump in to other dog walkers. If a dog then comes up to your dog while on a lead and yours has it then it's the other owners fault for not having the recall with their dog.
If you want training tips for these post them in the forum and I will help, also my friend is a dog trainer so can get extra advise from her if need be.

It's a fair comment RunningFree but sometimes it's easier said than done.
Alice, our cocker, was tremendously easy to train and does have good recall, selective hearing sometimes lol, but comes back every time.
Our oldest great dane used to be aggressive and is never ever off the lead but she still sometimes has a bit of a fit cos of something. it is rare now and we easily control it but shell never lose that. she was one when we got her and came with a whole host of problems.
our younger great dane was excellent at lead walking and recall until her first season, when we had to get help from a professional dog trainer to teach recall again. she isnt allowed off lead if she isnt obeying but some breeds are just more difficult to train than others and some are more reactive than others and it doesnt help with training sometimes when you come across a lot of reactors.

i bet you can laugh about it now but i bet you wanted to kill her at the time! its like something youd see on a film like marmaduke
my trouble with bella is that she has always loved alice and copies everything she does, including sprinting at full speed on open fields. the problem is is that bella is now fully grown and extra long legs and a giant body means that she covers the length of a huge field in seconds. we once came across a man with two whippets off lead who wanted to play and bella loves chase! i went to grab her and the man said 'dont worry love, shell never catch them'. well his face when bella had rounded them up seconds later
our on going task with bella is now calming her down. i walk her on her own now as she only wants to run when she is with alice and im scared shell get bloat one day.

We have this problem with Leia! Once she ran up to a woman feeding ducks and danced around her for the bread - soooo embarrassing! I had to drag her away by her collar! She's also harassed people having sandwiches by the canal! I have to put her on her lead in case any one we pass has food!

we took our two labs to Graves park the other week and Rudy was playing wth his ball but then proceeded to run to a large group of people who were having a picnic in the middle of the large grassy bit near the cafe. They weren't impressed,

I think Labradors have got to be the worst for this sort of thing. My dads and food is terrible.
Told him to put some training in with him but he just doesn't stick to it> Its embarrassing when U walk with them and it does something like that. I have to pretend I'm not with my dad and that hes just a stranger.

I have recently come across this site - its fabulous and i've never seen it before.
We are looking to be a South Yorkshire contact for them - so no doubt we will be asking you folks to get testing and reporting on any / some of the walks so we can keep our area updated
Check it out

There is also Gleadless common. Although it's not a huge park, A few laps around it and Sam wants to head for home lol. There are plenty of friendly chatty dog walkers too.
I know there is also Charnock Rec but i can't comment as we haven't been for a wander round since it's been "up dated".

If we are talking out towards Derbyshire, Shillito woods is a great place, on the left just before Fox House. You can do a large circular route through woods, streams, lamb fields, very nice and flat overall. There are horses out about being ridden by people too. There are several routes up there and i'm sure one by passes a pub!

Does anyone know how to walk from Bochum Parkway (near the former kennels) to the pub near Ferndale?

no am afraid not, but a woman at work used to run kennels up there, maybe it's the same woman? and I could ask her how to get there, see if she knows? worth a shot.

What a great idea. Whyming Brook, Stanage Edge, the woods off Abbey Lane and the walk from Porter Brook (Frog and Toad walk) down to the General Cmetary are all worth adding too

Oh yes and the walk along the Sheffield Canal from city centre to Meadowhall
Ailsa's favorite local walk was Padley Gorge but I dunno if that is still classed as Sheffield. We havent been since she died but promised we would take her ashes back there this summer, and to the seaside
