Depends what you want it to do.

The Samsung Galaxy 10.1 is as good as anything.

I have had both the Toshiba Thrive / AT100 and Motorola Xoom.

Both are cool. Pluses and minuses for both. Toshiba feels sturdy, which I liked, has great full sized USB, HDMI and SD card ports / slots but no Gorilla glass, speakers could be better and the cameras weren't brilliant. The Xoom is thinner, feels really well made, has Gorilla glass and excellent speakers and camera. The ports on the Xoom are the mini / micro type.

The Thrive was able to be updated to Honeycomb 3.1.
The Xoom updated to Honeycomb 3.2 on taking it out of the box.

If you want Ice Cream Sandwich right now, then you will need to look at another tablet or root the device you buy and install a custom ROM.

I would avoid the Samsung, it has only a proprietary connector... being able to access files via USB or SD card is really, really useful and is one of the main differentiators from Apple. The Samsung can, therefore, be more like an iPad.

The Sony tablet is quite quirky - try it at John Lewis.

Try the others at Carphone Warehouse on Fargate.

Oh, when I say I have a Xoom, I mean the original Xoom and not the Xoom 2 - be aware that the Xoom 2 doesn't have the same ports / slots as the Xoom.

I'm happy with my Xoom. I got it in the sale at CPW.

Other than price and styling each tablet will have much the same capabilities. For £400 you can get any of these I think. For a little more you could even look at a Transformer Prime.

Don't agonise over how much storage space they have - especially if you get one with an SD card slot.

P.S. - I wrote these entries on my Xoom. Upon purchasing an Android tablet, the first thing I recommend you do is shell out £1.50 on something like Thumb Keyboard which replaces the stock keyboard (which ain't terrible) and makes typing on the tablet faster, cleaner and more satisfying.

There are some cracking deals on the RIM Playbook at the mo, and I believe you can run android on that but it doesn't come pre installed.

I've got an asus eee transformer with keyboard dock. It took a lot of getting used to and it does just as much as my husbands ipad2 but overall the android apps just aren't as slick as the apple apps.

Amazon Fire - just for the ecosystem. For me thats what tablets and smartphones are about. Amazon is the only tablet manufacturer to compete with Apple cause of this, in my view. Just hopefully Amazon comes out with more models.

I have a touchpad with ICS, but the battery life is dire, for the money it cant be beat but it is no way better than an Ipad (any version).

i get a good few days on battery life from my touchpad ics.

i think people make more out of battery life than is really important. when was the last time you or anyone was away from any mains for more than a day or two anyway?

How many hours use do you get? Saying 2 days without saying what it's doing (using or stand by) is pointless.

I was talking about battery life as the touchpad on webos is really good, once cyanogen is used it's about half as good! Without doing a test I dont think you would have more than 4 hours use on ICS which is not alot at all, regardless how close a plug socket is.

I had a galaxy tab 7" but wanted something bigger. I found out that they discontinued the 3g slot on the 10" model unless you paid extra out for it. I also wanted to be able to upgrade memory via a slot as well. Seems they are charging extra for all the things that were standard options on the original Galaxy Tab.
Not wishing to be taken for a ride in this fashion I ended up with a Motorola Xoom 10" and had all above options for £340. The later model, Xoom 2, seems to have gone the same way as Samsung, ie charging over the odds for stuff you would have expected to get as standard.

I have an ASUS Transformer TF101 and i can't fault it - currently has a 64gb of memory in it - 16GB onboard + 16gb + 32gb cards

I've received all official updates without any problems and as it works brilliantly I've not even bothered rooting and putting a different firmware on it
