Hi there.

I am about to start work at the University of Sheffield and I've been looking at a few options on how to get there. I will be coming from Chesterfield everyday.

I've seen the X17 and will be getting that tomorrow, but its quite a long journey so I'm trying to cut down on that.

Someone has recommended the 505 park and ride from Tesco on Abbydale Road, which does look good. But what I really want to know is, how much does it cost? I've seen a previous post on here (it wont let me post the link as Im a new user!), but that is a few years old now. Does anyone on here regularly get that bus? Is it on time, good etc?

Another option: I have a car and don't mind driving and having a smallish walk. Does anyone know of any free street parking near the uni I could take advantage of?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
thanks a lot.

The 505 is a great little bus route, my daughter catches it every morning to school. It's pretty reliable, she catches the 8.00am bus and that gets to the Botanical gardens about 8.30, after the rush hour there's about one an hour. I paid about £1.70 to the Hallamshire Hospital the other day and I've never had any problems with a bus not turning up. I think it's your best option as parking is a nightmare around that area.

agreed. Although my recommendation is to ask the bus driver where the return journey stop is, as its not immediately obvious from what I recall.

(ended up calling SYPTE with the bus stop number and asking them... they were helpful to their credit)

You also need to pay attention to the times it runs as it stops earlier than most.

I agree with others that free parking is nigh on impossible near the uni. The 505 is a good service though - I think the single fare is 1.70 but I know you can get a ten-trip ticket for 15 pounds which isn't that bad really.

The 505 service is operated by TM Travel - www.tmtravel.co.uk. Parking is free, just buy a bus ticket from the driver.

If you are getting the X17 from Chesterfield, don't forget you can buy a day explorer or weekly Megarider that also includes the tram up to the University (£5.20 day, £14 week).

Also depending on which part of Chesterfield you are in, there is the tram park & ride at Halfway.
