used to look forward to the new season with a passion but its all changed now. rivers are crap give and take,16th of june used to see me chucking a waggler down the middle of the trent at winthorpe for 20lbs of pristine roach,or 50/ 60lbs of bream in the weirfield. just see the odd barbel angler now hoping for his one bite of the day on his pellett/ boilie attack,i know that the roach can re/appear come autumn at certain venues but its all hit and miss.miss the fens like mad,did you ever catch 100lbs of slabs at nocton fen, just down from the sugarbeet factory, or 60lbs of roach on the float at bardney in the autumn, used to love the wards gala on the witham, the draw at kirkstead was worth the money just for the laugh, went maybe 20 years in a row but the best draw i ever had was in the cyanide ( peg 245 ) one bite one eel ,the jokes were brilliant.the opens on the welland , cant remember the exact match but weighed 53lbs of slabs for nowhere , i was drawn in the 400,s somewere 110lds of slabs won it in the yacht club length.which was supposed to be the best roach pegs.another opening day venue was always crankley point , pegs 1 to 13 for a bite a chuck , roach , skimmers, chub, chublets, dace and perch, all gone now,odd barbel and the resident bream shoal ,all thats left, shant be getting up at midnight, ( very sad )

opening day used to be special when rivers and stillwaters had a close season. i took up fly fishing because as the coarse season closed the trout season opened. i'm going on the don tonight for a few hours fishing the waggler and maggot.

popular stretches such as collingham, cranlkley pt. and mill island will be packed. other stretches will barely see an angler.

There's not much better than seeing a stick float working its way down a river, and waiting for the dip, the strike, and the feel of a fish.
