I expect passion in any debate... it needs a little heat to make it mean something.

Anyone can express an opinion, but can you make me believe it?

To be honest, I think the idea of the I.Q. test is that it measures the potential for intelligence and not its attainment. Society and the current education system seems to have its hands full trying to carry out the conversion. As for spelling / grammar. It does help if a post is readable, people will tend then to "do as it says on the tin" and read it. If it is in gibberish then most people will ignore it.
The same applies to some of the strange abbreviations. If they need to be explained - they have not worked.
If this forum was to be taken seriously then the moderators would be deleting and even banning on the basis that the posts are non contributional and either designed to annoy or just a pathetic attempt to provide humour.
Humour can be great in the right place, but when its in the wrong place it is wasted.

A debate does not need passion, it needs inteligent input.
Why do we have to make you believe it? To pass an opinion is not an attempt to change your mind. It is a statement of belief and is not challengable.

Because if an opinion is fueled with passion and has a reason to be heard it's more compelling and far more interesting for dear reader!

And to keep in theme with the rest of the thread.... two l's in intelligent

I'm just joshing with you all, keep up the whinging people, it's far better than the trolling that has infected other areas of the forum, I'm sure you'll agree

It may be because there are certain cowardly people that enjoy the banality of petty argumentative banter, which they would not dare have in real life, who hide behind the anonymity of an internet forum to post ridiculous comments relating to whichever race, sex, faith etc., they currently discriminate against.

Oh dear, another of the forums problems has surfaced, overzealous moderating.
I'm sure some of the moderators here play about moving threads, re-titling them etc just to show off their "power", maybe it's just through boredom, who knows.
(this was moved from sheffield discussion)

Sure, if your lifes empty and without meaning holding onto anything that you can use to make yourself look superior and others look inferior is going to be important.
For the rest of us?
Not so much.

not at all

if you are unable to communicate effectively with the written word then how do you hope to succeed in life. of course, if your aspiration is to be a good chav then i can understand why you would champion illiteracy.

Let's start the ball rolling then.

Who think's BSF (British Schools for the Future) is a well thought out policy when it limits exposure to Microsoft products with no reference to teaching code, programming or building a computer from scratch, Linux Sysadmin etc? or comparing the benefits of Microsoft Windows against superior systems such as Macs and Linux homebrews? Means that money flows out of the country and stifles local SME talent in Linux etc? Should we follow Munich's example whose municipal authority ditched Windows in 2006 in order to promote GNU/Linux solutions to local need and saving millions of euros in the bargain and providing jobs for Munich based Linux engineers?

Yes basically but will the ps3 generation be interested, only if linux is more game orientated i feel to get them interested initially, saying that my knowledge of home computers could be written on a postage stamp, i booted up with linux from a cd yesterday for the first time and couldn't even get online with it using my broadband dongle on a spare machine even though the software to run it was installed, i'd love to get mny kids away from windows but i fear it will never happen, it's so ingrained.

I think you have to get the general drift of what is being said as well so that you are second guessing the word as you read it but it all goes to show that “I before E” and all that is going to make little difference to what is being typed or how we read it on a forum.

Txt spk is smt else though.

What bad spelling does do, in the mind of the reader, is create an impression of the author. In my mind, continuous bad spelling suggests a lack of education, a lack of vocabulary and an inability to clearly express their thoughts.
