Hi I need some help I have just sold my old laptop (sony vaio NS )
Now I want to buy a new laptop, I don't know if I should get a 13.3" one as I have never used or seen one, so I dont know if it will be too small or just get a 15.4" one, my last laptop was a 15,4 and i thought it would be better if it was a bit smaller.

I use my laptop when im away from my pc so it needs to be good

dual core 2ghz or better
3gb ram
160gb hdd or better
would like it to have a good battery
needs to look good
I dont want a cheap brand so i have been looking at ( Sony, Toshiba, Dell, HP, Samsung and Acer )

I dont know where to get it from so i need some advise
i dont think much of going to PC world as they alway let you down and it only 5min out of the door and you find it cheaper else where i have looked at ebay but these days its only £50 more new depending on what you like can anyone help me here

You missed out possibly one of the best brands for high quality laptops - Lenovo. They took over IBM's PC division a few years back. The ThinkPad T42 in particular is an excellent laptop. Not cheap but it will easily last you 10+ years if you look after it well. Unfortunately there are very few shops in the UK which stock these, so you really just have to order online and hope you like it when it arrives.

If you only want to keep it for 12-18 months, then go for something cheap instead, one of the cheap Dells should do you fine, otherwise you're basically wasting your money. I normally recommend the more expensive business-centric systems because I know those will last longer than the cheaper consumer ones as they are usually built to a higher standard. You haven't really stated a budget so its hard to know what you'd be willing to consider.

Fujitsu stuff is pretty good, mine have always lasted and they are good spec and great value. I would buy them over Dell or Acer any time and they seem to be the mos popuar cheap makes.

Your best of adding another £50 to the budget if you can afford it. The difference will be worth the extra money. There is an Amilo for 415 on that nice PC site thats pretty good, and also a netbook size thing if you wanted a small screen.

What do you want it for and where do you use it most? You want a really high spec laptop for almost no money and your main concern is that it looks good.....

Can you help? I need to know which optical drive is compatible with a Sony Vaio VGN-FS315E. I've heard it might be a panasonic UJ-840 but can that be right? Putting a panasonic drive into a sony laptop?

I'm a bit confused!

Thanks

What are you basing this thought on? Lenovo might be Chinese, but new ThinkPads are still made in the same factories IBM made them in. Please read reviews of the latest T42 - its still regarded as high quality just like when it had the IBM brand on it. I would not recommend it if it was crap.
