Dunno but at that rate it'll last a good 15 years.

I have an Acer 5250 dual core and ever since i bought it over 7 months ago it has a really annoying habit of overheating and shutting down. It has been back to pc world on three occasions where they have changed the fan on all occasions but it still keeps doing it.. I am now having to resort to an external fan with a duct that blows air taken from the side of the lappy as opposed to from underneath it which is going to cost me but am assured it will keep it running cooler.

If it's been back that many times pc world should have doen more than just change the fan. The problem with your situation is you got a pretty bad manufacturer and one of the worst resellers.

They're like any other budget brand really, despite all the whinging there's nothing really to choose between them. I've had an Acer laptop for 2-3 years now & it's been fine, & have also got an Acer 24" monitor that was cheaper than any other I found & is a right piece of kit. I know someone who had problems with their Acer lappy, but I fix PCs, there isn't a brand out there that hasn't had something break down at some point (apart from Corsair now I think about it, but they don't make whole PCs).
If you're really that bothered by the thought of buying one get a different brand, it's not as if you'll end up paying any more or anything. Personally I'd never get a PC from Argos though...

Buying from Argos must be a lot better than buying from somewhere like pc world.

Can't argue with that, though if Rich's online expect his usual "PC World > everyone" line. In fact if he's online he'll probably bitch at the mods for me mentioning him in a sarcastic way, sorry mods.
I generally buy online, mainly from ebuyer as RingMaster just linked to.

I agree their pc's are crap, but their laptops are fine this is my 6th and their easy enough to repair too, just replaced the dc jack on a travelmate.

Sorry to join in a bit late - but hopefully I can give you a different point of view. Acer are one of the brands we do not currently sell at MoreComputers. We have done in the past but were disappointed in the number of problems customers had and the subsequent support from Acer.
I've been talking to them again recently as they are very popular and I'm sure we would sell a lot again. They have assured me the support has improved and their repair centre is all in house now.
The main problem I have and the reason we are still not selling them is - say you bought your new laptop and it was faulty when it arrived (DOA). You'd quite rightly expect it to be collected and a new replacement sent to you. Acer do not do that - they will only repair the faulty machine even if it has never worked.
I'm not happy with that policy, so therefore we don't sell them.

Slightly off topic but is "Acer Direct" ( www.acerdirect.co.uk) the same company as Acer or just a third party that sells Acer products? If it's the former, I have a tale to share with you.....

I have no experience with Acer laptops, so I don't know what they are like, I guess it depends what you need it for, and if you have some spare cash, then go for one of the better, more expensive models.

I'd check out laptops direct £300-£400 section. Various alternatives including a well specced Vaio for £400.
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/
Acers just look and feel a bit cheap to me. They are cheap like but they just seem to lack a quality finish to me. I know a couple of owners who have had no problems though

If, as another poster suggests, the same company runs the acerdirect website, be very careful! Their prices may be keen, but if they get your order wrong (as they did with mine) the customer service is absolutely abysmal!
